Blanc de Chasse-Spleen 2025 demonstrates why this rare white wine has been a hidden favorite among lovers of dry white Bordeaux for years. Freshness, ripe white fruit, and subtle spiciness come together in a style that is both accessible and gastronomically versatile.

Blanc de Chasse-Spleen

Château Chasse-Spleen belongs to the absolute elite of Moulis-en-Médoc. Although the château does not hold Grand Cru Classé status, in terms of quality it is often on par with many classified houses and regularly performs even better. For a long time, Chasse-Spleen held the status of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, but in 2003 the château decided to withdraw from the classification itself. According to Jean-Pierre Foubet, managing director of Château Chasse-Spleen, a hierarchical system often leads to disputes and legal proceedings, whereas consumers seek stability.

The château is part of the Taillan Group, a family business founded by Jacques Merlaut and currently led by Céline Villars and her husband Jean-Pierre Foubet. Although Chasse-Spleen is primarily known for its red wines, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are grown on a small plot of approximately 1.8 hectares for the production of this exceptional white Bordeaux. You can find more information about the château under the Winery tab.

A rare white Bordeaux from the Médoc

White Bordeaux from the Médoc remains exceptional, and Blanc de Chasse-Spleen is a true classic in this regard. Produced in small quantities, the wine distinguishes itself through a style that combines freshness with riper fruit notes and subtle oak influence. While some white Bordeaux focus primarily on tension, Blanc de Chasse-Spleen seeks a greater balance between freshness, aromatic expression, and texture.

The wine is typically made from approximately 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc. Sémillon provides roundness and texture, while Sauvignon Blanc adds freshness, citrus, and tension. This combination results in a wine that is attractive when young but can also develop beautifully in the bottle.

Style and taste profile

Blanc de Chasse-Spleen 2025 displays a light yellow color with an expressive nose of citrus, grapefruit, melon, and citrus blossom, complemented by dried herbs and subtle floral notes. According to Antonio Galloni, the wine also shows a slightly earthy and savory undertone, which adds extra depth to the profile.

On the palate, the wine combines a soft start with ripe white fruit, passion fruit, and a subtle touch of mango. Well-integrated oak provides extra structure without overpowering the freshness. The wine remains lively and aromatic, with sufficient tension and length to be attractive both when young and to age for a few more years.

Chasse-Spleen is the star of the municipality of Moulis next to Château Poujeaux. Already since the early 1800's when during a visit by Lord Byron in 1821 he spoke the memorable words: "Quel remède pour chasser le spleen", and in Dutch "what a remedy to cleanse the spleen" to which the Château is said to be name derives, Chasse-Spleen is an exceptionally good wine.

Château Chasse-Spleen is, together with Château Poujeaux, the most important winery in Moulis. Although classified as Cru Bourgeois, the wine surpasses many Grand Cru Classé Medoc wines. Chasse-Spleen has always produced good wines, but the quality has greatly improved after the takeover in 1976 by the Taillan group, who also manage Château Haut-Bages-Libéral. The château was run by Bernadette Villars until she and her husband were killed in a hike in the Pyrenees in 1992. The company is now owned by daughter Claire.
