EXCLUSIVE OFFER - AVAILABLE SPRING 2028
Château Angélus 2025 presents a strikingly refined and energetic interpretation of Saint-Émilion. This Premier Grand Cru Classé combines power with precision, where ripe fruit, floral finesse, and an impressive texture come together. The 2025 looks set to be a vintage in which balance and depth combine exceptionally beautifully.
Château Angélus
Château Angélus belongs to the absolute elite of Saint-Émilion and is one of the most iconic names of Bordeaux. The estate is situated on the famous south-facing slopes and the “pied de côte” of Saint-Émilion, a terroir known for its exceptional combination of ripeness, freshness, and structure.
Under the leadership of the de Boüard family, Angélus has developed a style that combines richness and precision. Where some great Saint-Émilions emphasize pure concentration, Angélus often distinguishes itself through tension, refined tannins, and striking aromatic complexity. You can find more information about the château under the Winery tab.
Origin and growing season in Saint-Émilion
The 2025 growing season proceeded early and homogeneously. A mild winter ensured early bud formation, while a few periods of light frost naturally helped regulate spring pressure in the vineyard. The spring was cool and sunny, with sufficient rainfall to optimally nourish the vines.
The summer brought two heatwaves, but thanks to occasional rainy spells, the water balance remained stable. The combination of warm days and strong temperature differences between day and night ensured slow, precise ripening, preserving freshness and aromatic tension. According to Angélus, this resulted in small grapes with concentrated skins and exceptionally balanced ripeness. The harvest took place between September 10 and 20.
Grapes and vinification
Château Angélus 2025 consists of an almost equal distribution of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc. That exceptionally high proportion of Cabernet Franc gives the wine great refinement, aromatic tension, and a recognizable signature that distinguishes Angélus within Saint-Émilion.
The vineyards are situated on limestone and clay soils and have an average age of approximately 39 years. The grapes were harvested plot by plot based on precise ripeness analyses. Merlot was vinified in a combination of oak and stainless steel tanks, while Cabernet Franc was fermented largely in concrete tanks. Depending on the plot, cold maceration at 8°C and gentle extraction were used to preserve maximum finesse. The wine subsequently ages for approximately 22 months in fine French oak barrels, supplemented by large wooden foudres for a portion of the Cabernet Franc.
Style and taste profile
Château Angélus 2025 looks set to be a wine of immense precision and aromatic refinement. Expect a layered profile of dark berries, ripe black fruit, and floral notes, complemented by refined spices and the subtle tension characteristic of great Cabernet Franc.
According to the château, the wine displays a complex and distinctly aromatic profile with floral notes, spices, and crisp black fruit. On the palate, Angélus presents itself as rich yet exceptionally refined, with a texture described by the château as almost cashmere-like. The Merlot brings roundness and energy, while Cabernet Franc provides length, freshness, and a remarkably long finish. A Saint-Émilion with both immediate charm and impressive aging potential.
A signature of Cabernet Franc
What has distinguished Château Angélus within Saint-Émilion for years is the prominent role of Cabernet Franc. In 2025, that grape even reaches an exceptional share of 50% in the blend. This provides extra tension, aromatic complexity, and a more linear elegance alongside the richness of Merlot. It is precisely this combination that seems to make Angélus 2025 a particularly refined and distinctive vintage.

Parker
RP (96-98) A blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the 2025 Angélus is already beautifully harmonious, even at this early stage. Unfurling in the glass with notes of sweet dark berries and plums mingled with notions of violets, licorice and spices, it's medium- to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with ripe tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. Much like its 2022 predecessor, the 2025 underlines that this estate's shift toward greater purity and subtler élevage choices can be sustained even in historically warm years.
Since taking the helm at Angélus, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal and her team have been boldly evolving toward less impactful winemaking. What does that mean in practice? Cooler macerations, élevage that now incorporates foudres for the grand vin and tanks for Tempo, No. 3 and Carillon, reducing the impact of new barriques without the loss in precision that often comes from repeatedly reused barrels—along with, I'm sure, a host of other smaller changes that cumulatively mean that Angélus today is a very different beast from the rich, toasty wine of the 1990s and early 2000s. The 2025 vintage, cropped at 35 hectoliters per hectare, is one of the most accomplished wines produced to date in the estate's new era. Harvest took place between September 10–20, with different approaches to different parcels and varieties, Merlot seeing as much as two weeks' pre-fermentation macerations and Cabernet Franc a mere four or five days.

(99-100) The pureness of fruit is exceptional, with a long and linear palate of wonderfully curated raspberry, cherry and blueberry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied. You almost don’t see the tannins, but you know they are there. So silky and endless. It has the core of fruit of the best of the vintage. 50% merlot and 50% cabernet franc.

(95-97) The 2025 Angélus was picked from September 10 to 20 and Stéphanie de Bouard told me that they halved the pumpovers. The Cabernet Franc is aged half in foudres and half in new barrel, and the Merlot is half in new barrel and half in one-year-old barrels that were used for the 2023 vintage. The alcohol is 14.05% with a pH of 3.6, many grapes showing a gram or more malic acid. This note comes from a narrower Riedel glass that showed the wine in a better and more accurate light. The bouquet opens with blackberry, raspberry, light cassis scents and a touch of iodine, well defined, the oak seated politely in the background. The palate is silky smooth with filigree tannins, very well judged acidity plus palpable underlying sapid notes that come through towards the finish. Fine tension, very focused with a very persistent aftertaste, this is an Angélus with great potential and it should give 25 to 30 years' drinking pleasure.

Château Angélus was a hive of activity when I visited, as it was the night before the inauguration of their new cellar. A brand new Steinway occupied the tasting room just in case I fancied tinkling the ivories after the tasting, though I doubt Stéphanie de Boüard would like to hear Chopsticks again.
“The yields are 30 hl/ha,” De Boüard explained. “We decided not to be severe in terms of green harvest to balance the vine. There was no serious hydric stress, only a little early in the season that led to smaller berries with thicker skins. There was almost no water in August, which had an impact on the technical maturity, slowing the production of sugar and creating moderate alcohol levels. Phenolic maturation continued, so the wines’ colours are deep. Winemakers typically strive for a 50:50 skin-to-juice ratio, which came naturally in 2025 [rather than through adjusted maceration]. We started picking on September 10. We knew that we did not have to wait further because the Cabernet Franc was ripe. Given the forecast for a deterioration in the weather, we finished on September 20.”
(95-97+) The 2025 Angélus (50% Cabernet Franc, 50% Merlot) is a superb contemporary Grand Vin. Aromatic, vibrant and wonderfully fresh, the 2025 dazzles from start to finish. Blood orange, mint, white pepper, rose petal and chalk weave through layers of vibrant red-toned fruit. Here, too, the Grand Vin impresses with its noble purity and understated grace. Élevage is 50% foudre/50% new oak for the Cabernet Franc, and 60% new oak/40% once-filled barrels for the Merlot. I can't wait to see how this ages.

Michel de Boüard de Laforest, historian, chartist and rector of the Academy of Caen, researched the origins of his family. The earliest reference he found to his family tree was that of Georges Boüard, born in 1544, a Bourgeois and Jurat from the city of Bordeaux. At the end of the 18th century, in 1782, Jean de Boüard de Laforest, a bodyguard of the king, settled in Saint-Emilion. His daughter, Catherine Sophie de Boüard de Laforest, met Charles Souffrain de Lavergne in 1795 and settled on the Mazerat estate, which belonged to her husband. At the beginning of the 20th century, Maurice de Boüard de Laforest inherited the estate. He expanded it and the half kilo in 1920 with the name of a 3-hectare toe enclosure called Angélus. He left it to his sons in 1945. Jacques and Christian de Boüard de Laforest continue the work of their father and that of previous generations. The property was incorporated in 1954. They expanded it further until it exceeded 20 acres in 1985. At that time, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, son of Jacques, took over the management of the estate and was joined in 1987 by his cousin Jean-Bernard Grenié, son-in-law of Christian and later his daughter, Stéphanie de Boüard- Rivul in 2012.
The vineyard of Château Angélus is located in a natural amphitheater overlooking the three Saint-Emilion churches. In the middle of this special place, the sounds were amplified and the angel bells in the morning, afternoon and evening. They travel the working day in the rhythm in the surrounding villages and the men and women who take a few minutes to stop working and pray. The great French Impressionist painter Jean-François Millet immortalized this moment of prayer in his magnificent work "The Angelus", now on display at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Less than a kilometer from the famous bell tower of Saint-Emilion, situated at the acclaimed 'foot of the hill' facing south, Angélus has been the life's work of eight generations of the Boüard de Laforest family. In the probable classification of Saint-Emilion wines in 1954, Château Angélus was a Grand Cru Classé. Already at that time it benefited from a solid reputation, which gave rise to the Bordeaux wine crisis of 1973 and participated in the oenological renewal of the 1980s. In this context, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, graduate oenologist at the University of Bordeaux, took advantage of past of this wonderful wine, while resolutely focusing on the future strategy and developing and pursuing an ambitious and innovative policy to achieve excellence in viticulture and making.
