VDP Grosse Lage is the designation for the very best German vineyards, each parcel of which is precisely defined. Unique wines with a special expression of the specific plot, a mature character, and great aging potential are born here. Only the very best grape varieties, specifically suited to the vineyard, are privileged to be planted here. The strictest possible production criteria guarantee a place at the top of the VDP qualification pyramid. Grosse Lage Morstein is situated on a pristine, south-facing slope that extends to a plateau 280 meters above sea level and is also the oldest single vineyard in Westhofen (1282). Situated in the middle of the slope, between 180 and 240 meters above sea level, VDP Grosse Lage Morstein has a 20% slope. The soil consists of heavy Tonmergel soils with limestone deposits in the upper layer. The subsoil is dominated by aquiferous limestone rock layers, which guarantee an optimal supply of nutrients and minerals.
Wittmann's Aulerde GG is deep, intense, and stony with a typical GG Riesling iodine nose. Given that the first written mention of this vineyard dates back to 1380, it seems our predecessors long ago recognized the sublimity of this south-facing hillside. It slopes gently down towards the village and is the warmest spot, promoting early grape ripening. The Riesling vines grow in the heart of Aulerde, where heavy clay-marl soil is interspersed with loess loam and limestone, and the subsoil is acidified with yellow and sandy clay loam and gravel. The vines at this site are almost 70 years old and planted at high density.
Located in Westhofen in the Rheinhessen wine region, Weingut Wittmann produces biodynamic wines with terroir expression and extreme precision. The Wittmanns and their ancestors have been winemakers in Westhofen since the 17th century. The experience of some 350 vintages from over 15 generations is a significant part of the family's priceless heritage. Time and tranquility are essential ingredients for making a good wine. And this is precisely what the wines receive in abundance in the vaulted cellar, built in 1829. Winemaker Philipp Wittmann watches over his wines under constant temperature and humidity conditions as they mature in 80 wooden barrels. The oldest of these barrels dates back to 1890 and has housed many great vintages. Each barrel contains the harvest from a single vineyard plot.

The 2024 Aulerde GG Westhofen Riesling is clear, fine and delicately salty on the nose, revealing pineapple and yellow stone fruit but also lemon aromas. Elegant, round and fresh on the palate, this is a pure and linear, just-ripe and grippy Riesling with remarkable finesse and lightness and a refreshing savory finish. It still needs some time to gain in finesse and charm. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2025.
Wittmann's 2024 Morstein GG Riesling is the outstanding wine of the vintage at this organic domaine. At least, it was the best at the tasting at the end of August, while other favorites such as La Borne and Brunnenhäuschen still had to contend with the harshness of the limestone and were more promising than enjoyable. It is possible that the difference in quality between the crus and the basic wines is greater than the ratings here suggest. Nevertheless, it should be emphasized how excellent the relatively inexpensive Rieslings of the 2024 vintage are. It would not be the first time that the single vineyards have distanced themselves more clearly from the base wines over time, catching up with the Morstein, which is in splendid early form. But this requires patience, and in the meantime, one can enjoy the supposedly lesser wines of the house with pleasure. 2024 was not a charming, full-bodied vintage but a lean one, with a lot of raciness and tension, which, especially on the limestone soils of Westhofen, is likely to prove once again to be a late starter.
The year 2024 began with a mild spring, which already initiated the budding of the vines in mid-April. Fortunately, the vineyards around Westhofen were spared the late frost from April 22 to 23. This was “a decisive factor for the development of the vines,” according to Wittmann.
Until flowering, the weather was moderate, which compensated for the initial head start of the vines. A constant supply of water throughout the growing season ensured vigorous vines and optimal flowering, but Peronospora was a steady challenge.
The harvest began on September 12 with a pre-harvest of the Burgundy varieties. Their main harvest took place from September 16 to 23 under ideal conditions. The grapes were of the highest quality and in excellent condition, Wittmann reports.
During the Riesling harvest, however, a change in the weather led to repeated rainfall, which required a lot of nerves and patience. Nevertheless, the grapes remained healthy due to cultivation measures beforehand, and they ripened slowly but steadily. From September 27 to October 10, the Rieslings were harvested and also yielded ripe and healthy grapes, albeit with more moderate must weights than in previous years.
Wittmann says the young wines of the 2024 vintage remind him of classic vintages such as 2002. And that one is drinking excellently right now.

From: Rheinhessen, Pfalz & Mittelrhein: A Game of Patience (Sep 2025)
The 2024 Riesling Westhofener Aulerde Grosses Gewächs is from the richer, deeper soils of Aulerde, from vines that are now well over 70 years old. Just a touch of reduction trembles on the nose, with a lovely flicker of anise and a streak of peach. The palate is smooth, straight and linear but with wonderful fill and fluidity. Lemony brightness offers overtones of yellow plum and white peach. (Bone-dry)
- By Anne Krebiehl, MW on July 2025
Philipp Wittmann was succinct in his assessment of 2024: “A slightly later season, a relatively long vegetative period, a year with sufficient rain. A classically Nordic ripening of fruit.” He noted that rain around the time of flowering meant intense and time-consuming work to combat disease pressure, but “August and September were really good, a wonderful late summer. We started picking Pinot varieties on September 10. Some rain followed, but thankfully the grapes remained stable. In the meantime, we went through the Riesling sites and made pre-harvests to help concentrate the remaining fruit. We started picking Riesling in late September and well into October. You needed patience, to wait as long as possible.” Wittmann added a new GG to his portfolio this year, from the recently classified Gundersheimer Höllenbrand. Of the usual bottlings—which are sleek, racy, precise and clear as a bell—the Brunnenhäuschen is particularly splendid this year.

Located in Westhofen in the Rheinhessen wine region, Weingut Wittmann produces biodynamic wines with terroir expression and extreme precision. The Wittmanns and their ancestors have been wine growers in Westhofen since the 17th century. The experience of some 350 volumes of more than 15 generations is great in the priceless heritage of the family. Time and rest are essential ingredients for making a good wine. And this is exactly what the wines get in abundance in the vaulted cellar, built in 1829. The oldest of these barrels is from the year 1890 and has already housed many great vintages. Each barrel contains the harvest of 1 single vineyard plot.
Star winemaker Philipp Wittmann (responsible for the cellar and export), together with father Günther (vineyards) and mother Elisabeth (sales), have built a fantastic wine company in Westhofen, Rheinhessen. Since 1990, work has been done biologically and later biologically dynamically. The starting point for the wines is therefore: terroir expression through healthy soil. A low yield per hectare, manual selection of the best grapes and a very slow vinification with natural yeasts without the addition of sulfite on large wooden feeds do the rest. The house is 'the standard' for Rheinhessen and now also a standard for German white in general. This is evident from the enormous flow of international valuations that the wines receive, both higher and lower. For example, Philipp has already twice been named the best white winemaker in Germany by the authoritative Eichelmann in 2003 and 2013. In 2014 he received the same title from Gault Millau. Philipp is married to Eva Clüsserath who owns her own wine estate in the Moselle. Philipp is said to hate August: he has to divide his Grosse Gewächse. This is especially annoying because the demand is increasing and the supply is small. So he actually has too little for everyone. Not surprising, given that his GGs earn up to 96 points from Parker, he was crowned Germany's best white winemaker twice by Eichelmann, winemaker of the year at Gault Millau in 2014, and at Schlemmer Atlas in 2015 and annually in Mainz during the GG tasting as one of the very best!
Wittmann has consistently opted for quality, which means that he only releases the finest fruit from his vineyards as GG. The rest goes in the Westhofener and even the Riesling Trocken is partly made with this noble fruit.
