Sindicat La Figuera started as a small cooperative in the Montsant mountains, founded in 1932, and produces wines of clarity and integrity. From the 2020 vintage onwards, this wine is made entirely by Rene Barbier and Sara Perez (you know, from the Dido, Venus , Partida , Mas Martinet , and Clos Mogador ) and now continues under the name Venus la Universal Sindicat La Figuera. One must drive up the mountain slope along very narrow, winding roads to reach the town of La Figuera, which lies at an altitude of 600 meters and has only 80 inhabitants. The town seems to rise from the mountaintop, with the surrounding mountains and the Priorat region visible in all directions.
In the early 1930s, when the cooperative was founded, La Figuera was a bustling town; there were 25 residents involved in the establishment of the winery who contributed grapes to the first harvest. Garnatxa, as the Catalans call it, has always been planted around La Figuera and has always been the main grape used for Sindicat's flagship wine. While Cariñena is typically blended with Garnatxa in Montsant, La Figuera is known for the beauty and elegance of its pure Garnatxa wines and is one of the few places where it is bottled on its own. The town flourished until the mid-1950s, when a major storm devastated the area, followed by a severe frost the year after. Residents fled, and many of the vineyards were destroyed and abandoned.
La Figuera has never truly regained its population, although a few dedicated citizens have replanted Garnatxa vines, and there are now only three passionate members who have vowed to keep the cooperative alive. The famous winemaker from Priorat, René Barbier, also took notice of La Figuera's Garnatxa wines and decided to join forces with the members of the cooperative to help with winemaking. René says that you can always tell when a wine comes from La Figuera, because there is a unique limestone content in the soil that makes the Garnatxa lighter. In addition to preserving these special wines, René also wanted to keep alive the heritage of the people's cooperative movement, a movement that began in Catalonia's post-phylloxera era in the early 20th century.
Sindicat La Figuera works with 25 hectares of Garnatxa Fina, and the vines range in age from 20 to 70 years. The Venus la Universal Sindicat La Figuera is produced by René Barbier (of Clos Mogador, among others). It is a characteristic and rustic red with the chalky tannins of the limestone soils and the aroma of the Garnacha from the village. The wines are fermented with wild yeasts in underground concrete tanks with minimal temperature control, where they age for approximately 9 months on fine lees before being bottled with light clarification and filtration. It is a wonderfully accessible wine. Fresh red fruit, typical mineral aromas and flavors. Elegant, fresh, and juicy best summarizes this delicious wine, and it is not surprising that even this very affordable wine from René Barbier has received 90/100 Parker points since the 2018 vintage. The 2024 vintage even received 92/100 from Parker. Very special for a wine in this price category, but absolutely justified.

The 2024 Sindicat La Figuera was produced with a short maceration and one year in underground concrete vats, now for a little longer, 14 months, keeping the very traditional ways. They recently planted another 6,000 plants of Garnacha in the village of La Figuera, as many plants on clay soils died during the drought of 2022-2024. In 2024, the summer was not as warm, they harvested earlier, and the wine has 13% alcohol despite the low yields. It's floral, with a lifted nose of translucent red berries and plenty of herbs, a medium-bodied palate and very fine tannins. The wine has freshness, and the tannins are quite gentle; the plants were more balanced. They only produced around 30,000 bottles; all the vines delivered between 30% and 50% less.
Venus la Universal has a winery in the village of La Figuera in Montsant, which they call Orbita Venus, where they make all the Montsant wines from their family, including the ones from the cooperative, Sindicat de la Figuera. Sara Pérez loves 2024 for the cooler nights that changed everything. The wines have lower alcohol and more tension. There are also fewer 2024s, as it was a lower-yielding year. 2022 was very different; the plants didn't suffer the drought because they were coming from 2020 and 2021. However, they suffered heat waves, and they collapsed. The wines needed more time, and they are releasing the Venus range now. As long as they can, they don't add any sulfur in the wines from this project.
In 2025, they are experimenting to create a white Venus with much longer aging (they still don't know how long), mostly with Macabeo.

Venus la universal is the project of Sara Pérez she is the wife of Rene Barbier who makes the famous Clos Mogador, Espectacle and Manyetes. Sara Pérez is also in charge of the Clos Martinet family domain. In addition, she works closely with her brother Adria on Cims de Porrera. Father José Luis Pérez, one of the most important figures in the Spanish wine world, is proud of his children. He himself remains active in various wine projects. Sara Pérez owns and vinifies two beautiful wines on Venus La Universal, together with her husband René Barbier (Clos Mogador). As a tribute to every small food manufacturer from the 1920s who wanted to become big, Sara has baptized this mini-domain Compania Universal de Vinos. There on 'La Uni', as she likes to call it, she has created almost the mother of all feminine wines: Venus. And 'Dido' is the more than exemplary daughter of 'Venus'.
René and Sara took the goddess Venus as inspiration for this project. One of their goals is therefore to "interpret femininity through a bottle of wine". This may seem like a strange choice for a bodega working out Grenache and Carignan wines in Southern Catalonia, but it makes sense once you've tasted it. These are incredibly elegant, refined, sensual expressions from the Denominació d'Origen Montsant, with understated alcohol levels and enormous texture.
The grapes for the wines come from vineyards owned by four different grape-growing families in Falset, as well as another small plot owned by Venus. You could call Venus a negociative project, but it is more correct to say that it is a partnership between these four families and René and Sara. Venus is the sole customer of these small growers, so their grapes are grown in accordance with the strict ecological standards set by the couple. The grapes for Dido come from the Falset area, from vineyards with soils based on decomposed granite called sauló. These soils are low in organic matter and contribute to the production of grapes with great ripeness and fruit aromas. The grapes for Venus come from clay-limy soils between Marçà and Guiamets. These soils promote a slow, elegant and complex maturity.
