Description
This wine, named after its grape, is produced almost exclusively in and around Spanish Galicia, primarily in Valdeorras. It boasts a round, full flavor, mild oak notes, soft acidity, a touch of spice, and a pleasant blend of ripe citrus and white fruit. Fresh exotic citrus fruit with hints of Szechuan pepper and flowers. On the palate, we experience well-integrated ripe acidity, a charming roundness, a rich and full mid-palate, with a subtle exotic note in the retro. The whole is enveloped in an unobtrusive coat of cask aging with mineral characteristics. Its affinity for oak makes this wine an excellent alternative for those tired of Chardonnay. Rafael himself, by the way, claims he makes the Spanish Grüner Veltliner!
Valdeorras is one of Spain's smaller and lesser-known wine regions. It's located in Galicia in the northwest of the country, between the more well-known DOs of Rías Baixas and Bierzo. The vineyards for this wine lie at an altitude of 600 to 720 meters and consist primarily of sandy soils. Valdeorras, literally "valley of gold," enjoys a continental climate. Because it's located some 150 kilometers inland, the influence of the Atlantic Ocean is much less than in other parts of Galicia.
Rafael Palacios is the youngest brother of Alvaro Palacios, who became known primarily for his project in the Priorat region. The Palacios family has long owned the renowned Palacios-Remondo bodega in the Rioja town of Alfaro (Rioja Baja), where Alvaro left for Priorat in the late 1980s. Rafa is the youngest of nine siblings and worked as an oenologist at the family estate in Rioja. He focused primarily on perfecting the Plácet white wine, developing a taste for producing top white wines in Spain.
After completing an internship in Valdeorras, Galicia, he was convinced that this was where he would create his great white wine, using Godello, the region's signature white grape. He left everything behind at the end of 2003, and within a few months, he sought out and purchased the oldest Godello vineyards in the highest valley of Valdeorras, the Valle del Bibei. He specifically sought out the highest, most difficult-to-access, and lowest-yielding vineyards, which the villagers were no longer interested in because they required too much work and yielded too little. He quickly succeeded in acquiring 12 hectares, rented a large garage and cellar nearby for vinification, and by 2004 had already produced his first As Sortes. His second wine, the Louro, followed a year later, and since 2011, the base wine, Bolo, has been available.
This wine was an immediate success, and in short order, his wines achieved cult status both domestically and internationally. He now also uses small quantities of Treixadura and is already thinking about how to improve. The construction of the bodega itself is entirely subordinate to acquiring the best vineyards and producing the finest white wine, but by 2011, his plans for this were sufficiently matured. Rafael himself calls Godello the lung of his wines; it's a glyceric varietal with exceptionally few aromas. Nevertheless, this grape is capable of truly top performance at high altitudes, with an unprecedented freshness. Godello naturally has high tartrate acidity, which guarantees good aging over time. Treixadura is similar to Godello but has greater aromatic potential. Rafa now owns 21 hectares, of which almost 20 hectares are Godello and just over 1 hectare Treixadura. He also controls another 8 hectares of Godello. All the plots are farmed organically. He cultivates his best plots: Sorte O Soro, Sorte Antiga and Os Canieros entirely using biodynamic methods.

The youngest of the portfolio is the 2024 Louro, which has a balsamic, herbal and faintly medicinal nose (it does smell a little of bay leaf, which is what "louro" means in the Galician language!), quite aromatic. It fermented in 3,500-liter oak foudres, where the wine matured with the lees for four months. It doesn't lack ripeness; it comes in at 14% alcohol but retains good freshness and acidity. It's approachable and has a tender texture. They produced 185,000 bottles. It was bottled between April and May 2025.
Rafael "Rafa" Palacios is ecstatic about the quality of his 2023s. He said, "The 2023 vintage corresponds to a typically cool year, which is evident in the quality of the wines. There was good aromatic and phenolic ripeness due to the year, which had more rain than 2024 and milder summer temperatures—it's enhanced by the acidic framework or skeleton of the vintage, which makes it very complete and elegant, one of the best, if not the best, of the last decade." As for 2024, from which I already tasted the entry-level Louro, it "is a slightly more open and accessible vintage, not as vertical as the 2023. For me, it's a more immediate, opulent and flavorful year. The slightly less rain during the season and the higher average temperatures led to a wine with a different profile."

The 2024 Godello Louro do Bolo from Valdeorras is nuanced, with hay, anise, acacia and a hint of reduction layered over barrel influence. Dry and intense, it balances richness with vibrant acidity, enhancing the variety’s delicacy without losing intensity.

Rafa Palacios is the white winemaker of Spain. In barely 1 decade he has put himself on the map as the specialist of top white wines. His influence was enormous. At the moment, Godello is one of Spain's most popular white grape varieties and all the well-known oenologists in Valdeorras have their own project.
Rafael Palacios is the youngest brother of Alvaro Palacios, who became best known for his project in the Priorat. The Palacios family has had the famous Palacios-Remondo bodega in the town of Alfaro (Rioja Baja) for many years, where Alvaro left for Priorat in the late 80s. Rafa is the youngest of nine siblings and worked as an oenologist on the family estate in Rioja. He mainly focused on perfecting the white wine Plácet and thus got a taste for making top white wines in Spain.
After an internship in Valdeorras in Galicia, he was convinced that it would be here that he would make his great white wine with Godello, the typical white grape of this region. He left everything behind at the end of 2003 and in a few months he searched for and bought the oldest vineyards Godello in the highest valley of Valdeorras, Valle del Bibei. He mainly looked for the highest elevation, most difficult to access and least profitable vineyards that the villagers were no longer interested in because they involved too much work and too few yields. He managed to buy 12 hectares in a short time, rented a large garage and cellar nearby for vinification, and in 2004 he made his first As Sortes. His second wine, the Louro, followed a year later.
This wine immediately hit like a bomb and in a short time his wines gained a true cult status at home and abroad. In the meantime, he also uses small amounts of Treixadura and is already thinking about doing even better. The construction of the bodega is completely subordinate to the acquisition of the best vineyards and the making of the best white wine, but in 2011 the building plans have matured sufficiently and he has built a small and practical hall with a view of the vineyard of Sorte Antiga.
