2024 Poggio Maestrino Spiaggiole Morellino di Scansano

A fresh and approachable Morellino from the coastal region of Tuscany, with juicy fruit and Mediterranean spiciness.

Spiaggiole is primarily based on Sangiovese, locally known as Morellino. The vineyards benefit from sea breezes and sunny exposure, resulting in ripe grapes that retain natural acidity. Vinification focuses on fruit expression and balance, with controlled extraction to preserve the appellation's fresh style.

The 2024 vintage

2024 saw favorable growing conditions with ample sunshine and cooling influences from the sea. This resulted in healthy grapes with good ripeness and fresh acidity. The wine therefore displays both ripe fruit and liveliness and structure.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, the wine presents itself as a ruby red with bright reflections. The nose opens with red fruit notes such as cherry and plum, complemented by Mediterranean herbs and a light earthy note. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, supple tannins, and a juicy core of fruit. The finish is clean and slightly spicy, with a pleasant balance between ripeness and freshness.

Poggio Maestrino winery is part of Rocca di Castagnoli, owned by Calogero Calì. He has owned Rocca di Castagnoli since 1981 and has since acquired four other wine companies, including Poggio Maestrino. He employs an impressive team of winemakers and grape growers, led by Daniele Pagni, to get the wines from all companies the way he wants them. The end result is never a megalomaniac and expensive blockbuster but rather a digestible and elegant wine for a decent price.

Poggio Maestrino is located in the Morellino di Scansano DOCG appellation. The soil there is medium in texture and has a volcanic origin. The vines have an average age of about 10 years and the vineyard covers approximately 13.5 hectares and is located 150 m above sea level.
