Leonildo Pieropan is considered the godfather of Soave. The wines are made from Garganega and Trebbiano grapes grown in the hills surrounding the town of Soave. The special La Rocca cuvée, made from late-harvest grapes, is aged in French oak and has won numerous international awards. Andrea and Dario continue their father's work and, in addition to the renowned Soave, also produce red wines of exceptional quality. After studying regional grape varieties, the terroir, and the microclimate, the company acquired vineyards and real estate in Cellore d'Ilasi (Valpolicella and Amarone) in 1999. From Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Croatina Veronese, they now produce a beautiful Valpolicella, Ruberpan, and a complex and rich Amarone. The former 15th-century monastery on the estate, Villa Cipolla, is currently being restored and converted into a luxury agriturismo.
In the glass, Pieropan's La Rocca Soave Classico is clear and sparkling with an intense (pale) yellow color. It's a characterful wine with aromas of exotic fruit and nuts. It's soft and captivating on the palate, with hints of citrus, spice, and vanilla. This Soave is an ideal accompaniment to robust and flavorful fish and shellfish (lobster, crab). It also pairs well with white meat, rabbit, and chicken in light sauces.

The 2022 Soave Classico is a total pleasure on the nose. Sweet smoke and mint nuances complement tropical green melon notes. This soothes with its soft textures while stimulating the senses with a zesty mix of brisk acidity and candied citrus. It tapers off crisp and clean with an inner floral resonance as lemon oil traces slowly fade. I would drink this any night of the week. What a treat.

The 2021 Soave Classico lifts from the glass with an intense burst of sour citrus, crushed rocks, sea spray and sour melon. Its medium-weight textures wash across the palate with prominence, nicely contrasted by a reverberation of sweet and sour green citrus and zesty acidity. Granny Smith apples and exotic inner florals cascade throughout the finale, as the 2021 tapers off with unexpected length. Wait, this is an “entry-level” Soave Classico? Bravo. (Lot # 14.02.22)
