Persoonlijke gegevens
This Taganan Tinto from EnvĂnate comes from steep, volcanic slopes on the Atlantic coast of Tenerife. Old vines, saline influences, and minimal intervention result in a red wine that is light, energetic, and distinctly pure, with great tension and finesse, and a clear character of its own within the Spanish wine landscape.
Winery
EnvĂnate is the project of four winemakers who met during their oenology studies. Their approach focuses on origin and precision, with minimal intervention in the cellar. They work in multiple regions, but Tenerife is perhaps their most distinctive project. In Taganana, they manage old, often ungrafted vineyards on extremely steep slopes. Everything here is done by hand. You can find more background on the estate in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The vineyards are located in the remote northeast of Tenerife, around the village of Taganana. This area is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, with constant wind, high humidity, and relatively cool conditions. The soils consist of weathered volcanic rock, rich in minerality. The combination of altitude, ocean influence, and poor soils results in low yields and grapes with great tension and natural freshness.
Grapes and vinification
The Taganan Tinto is a field blend of local grapes such as Listán Negro, Negramoll, and other indigenous varieties planted intermingled. Many vines are between 80 and 120 years old and ungrafted, which contributes to complexity and purity. The harvest is done by hand. Fermentation takes place with whole clusters and natural yeasts. The wine then ages in large, used wooden barrels and concrete, ensuring the fruit and terroir remain central. It is barely filtered and only minimally sulfited at bottling.
Style and taste profile
In the glass, the wine displays a clear, light ruby red color. The aroma opens with red berries, cranberry, and wild strawberry, followed by spicy notes and a distinct salty, smoky minerality. On the palate, it is light and precise, with fresh acidity and a fine structure. The tannins are soft yet present. What makes this wine special is the combination of elegance, tension, and an almost salty character that directly points to its seaside origins.
Food and wine pairings
This wine is surprisingly versatile. It pairs well with grilled fish such as tuna or swordfish, but also with poultry, roasted vegetables, or dishes with Mediterranean herbs. Serving it slightly chilled works excellently and emphasizes its fresh character. It also comes into its own with charcuterie or lighter meat dishes.
Why this wine stands out
Taganan Tinto is one of EnvĂnate's most characterful wines. The combination of old, ungrafted vines, volcanic soils, and Atlantic influences produces a wine that is light in color but grand in expression. This is not a powerhouse, but a wine centered on finesse, tension, and drinkability. It is precisely this that makes it so interesting for enthusiasts who look beyond classic styles.
Short summary
Light ruby red wine with aromas of red berries, herbs, and briny minerality. Fresh, energetic, and elegant, with subtle tannins and a long, lively finish. A pure expression of Tenerife with plenty of tension and drinkability.

Drink Date: 2025 - 2032
The 2024 Táganan Tinto comes from a more challenging vintage in the zone of Taganana, very warm and dry, because 2023 was exceptionally good there. They did a shorter maceration, and the élevage was with the fine lees in 228-liter French oak barrels for nine months. They have been working the vineyards on their own, and this shows a step up in precision. They have also worked on minimizing the reductive character of the wines. This is clean and floral, and the palate is medium-bodied with some grainy tannins, a lighter year than 2023. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025.
I tasted the bottled 2024s (and the bottled 2023 Migan) from Tenerife with Roberto Santana from EnvĂnate in the middle of their 2025 harvest. 2024 was dry, similar to 2023, with uneven sprouting because of a warm winter, and they had to do a green harvest to correct that. There weren't any heat waves during the summer or harvest, and the harvest was early but not as early as 2023. It was a small crop for reds but very good—quality and quantity—for whites, all of them put through 100% malolactic. 2024 is the best year for La Santa. In Taganana, the style of the reds resembles 2021 or 2022, and the whites might resemble the style of 2023 but with more freshness.
In Tenerife, they work 18 hectares of the 22.5 hectares they control, and they own around 7.5 hectares, with three to five of them in Taganana. In 2024, they produced close to 80,000 bottles, a little less than in 2023.

EnvĂnate (translates as "wine itself") is the brainchild of 4 friends, winemakers Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos and JosĂ© MartĂnez. This gang of four was founded in 2005 while studying oenology at the University of Miguel Hernandez in Alicante. After graduating, they formed a winemaking consultancy, which evolved into EnvĂnate, a project focused on exploring distinctive plots of land, mainly in the Atlantic regions of Ribeira Sacra and the Canary Islands. Their shared goal is to make very pure and authentic wines that express the terruño of each parcel in a clear and concise way. To this end, no chemicals are used in any of the EnvĂnate vineyards, all plots are picked by hand, the grapes are trodden and the wines are fermented exclusively with wild yeasts, with a varying proportion of whole grape bunches included. Before maturing, the wines are aged in old barrels and concrete, and sulfur is only added at bottling when necessary. The result is some of the most exciting and honest wines produced in Spain today.
