The Burgundian Morey wine family is widely branched, with deep roots in Chassagne-Montrachet, a small, picturesque village 15 km south of Beaune. The Marc Morey estate is managed by Bernard Mollard, Marc Morey's son-in-law. Bernard Mollard is a passionate wineman with an exceptional sense for quality. Winemaker Bernard and Sabine Mollard specializes in producing terroir-driven Burgundies, such as those from Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Puligny-Montrachet, in various grades. Respect for the terroir is the key word at Marc Morey. The vines are pruned for optimal yields. The soil is worked year-round. For several years, the estate has been located in Chassagne-Montrachet near Beaune in the Côte-d'Or department.

Perhaps the rarest from Marc Morey – the Red Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru – a fantastic Pinot Noir from vines over 50 years old, originating from Morey’s Premier Cru Morgeot vineyard, comes this refined Pinot Noir. The red fruit practically bursts out of the glass: cherries, raspberries, redcurrants, followed by a finish of spices and subtle wood notes.

The Morgeot vineyard is one of the most important and renowned Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation in the Côte de Beaune. Chassagne-Montrachet is known for both white and red wines, but the white wines – made from Chardonnay – are the most internationally appreciated. Morgeot plays a key role in this through the complex and rich wines originating from this exceptional terroir.

Location and terroir

Morgeot is located in the southern part of the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation and comprises several "lieux-dits" (specific plots within the vineyard) that together constitute the Premier Cru classification. The terroir of Morgeot is characterized by a calcareous subsoil, with clay and limestone as the main components of the topsoil. This soil composition is perfect for growing Chardonnay grapes, as it ensures a unique combination of minerality, freshness, and concentration in the wines.

History

The Morgeot vineyard has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages, when the area was part of a monastery managed by Cistercian monks. The Monastery of Morgeot had a significant influence on viticulture in this area, and the name of the vineyard is derived from this. The vineyards were planted and cultivated by the monks, and their influence on viticulture in Burgundy is noticeable to this day.

Wines from Morgeot

Although Chassagne-Montrachet is known for both red and white wines, Morgeot is primarily famous for its white Chardonnay wines. These wines are known for their robust structure and rich flavors, with aromas of ripe fruit such as peach and apricot, along with buttery and nutty notes typical of Burgundian Chardonnay. Additionally, they often display mineral notes that clearly reflect the chalky terroir.

The white wines from Morgeot are generally slightly fuller and more powerful than those from other Premier Cru vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet, which makes them particularly attractive to lovers of rich, complex Burgundian wines.

Red wines

Although less common, red wines (made from Pinot Noir) are also produced in Morgeot. These red wines are typically robust, with notes of red fruit such as cherries and raspberries, but they also have an earthy undertone that characterizes them. Due to the clay in the soil, the red wines have a full structure and firm tannins.
