Guillaume Thienpont, known for Vieux Château Certan in Pomerol, collaborates with Viñedos del Contino on Chorus 2024. It is a wine where two worlds come together. Not to copy each other, but to reinforce one another. The precision and refinement from Bordeaux are applied here to Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa, resulting in a style that immediately stands out for its calm, balance, and detail.
Chorus 2024: a new interpretation of Rioja
Chorus 2024 is not a classic Rioja. It is a project in which a different approach was deliberately chosen. Less focus on power and extraction, more attention to texture, tension, and refinement.
The name Chorus was not chosen by accident. The word comes from the Latin chorus and the Greek khorós , and refers to a group of voices singing together in harmony. That fits this wine perfectly. Different plots, soils, and influences come together in a single whole. Rioja and Pomerol each retain their own character, but together form a wine with balance and cohesion.
The idea arose from the desire to approach the terroir of Contino in a different way. Not by changing it, but by looking at it from a different perspective. That makes this wine different. It remains Rioja, but feels more modern and precise.
Vineyard and origin: San Rafael as the base
The grapes come from three selected plots within the San Rafael estate in Rioja Alavesa. This estate is situated along the Ebro and boasts a wide variety of soils.
Viña del Olivo provides elegance and fine tannins. San Gregorio Encina brings tension and minerality. Don Vicente gives power and structure.
This combination results in a wine with layers. Each plot is harvested and processed separately so that the characteristics are optimally preserved.
Harvest, vinification and aging
2024 was a balanced year, without extreme peaks. This is reflected in the wine. The ripening of the grapes proceeded evenly, allowing for precision work.
The harvest is carried out entirely by hand and by plot. Only grapes are picked at the right moment. This is followed by very precise vinification, in which each component is treated separately.
Fermentation takes place in wooden vats with natural yeasts. During this process, continuous tasting is performed to guide the extraction. The wine subsequently ages for 12 months in French oak barrels, with an emphasis on structure and refinement.
Style and flavor profile of Chorus 2024
Chorus 2024 revolves around balance and texture. The aroma features dark fruit such as blackberries and plums, complemented by floral notes and subtle spices.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, but never heavy. The tannins are fine and polished. The fruit remains crisp and clear, with a fresh undertone that keeps the wine lively.
What stands out is the calmness in the wine. Everything feels controlled and precise. The finish is long and refined, with a subtle tension that lingers.
Limited production and unique character
Chorus 2024 was produced in a limited edition. It is not a standard cuvée, but a project in which selection and precision take center stage.
It shows what is possible when you work with focus and dare to make choices in both vineyard and cellar.
Summary
Chorus 2024 is a modern Rioja with a clear focus on finesse and structure. Made by Contino and Guillaume Thienpont, with grapes from three plots. A wine that combines depth and elegance and shows Rioja from a different angle.

The 2024 Chorus was produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first wine from 1974. They decided to bring someone from outside to do a different interpretation of their vineyards and selected Guillaume Thienpont, from Vieux Château Certan fame. With the help of the Jorge Navascués technical team, they crafted an ethereal, fluid, brilliant Contino from 2024, different from any other ever produced here. The secret is to control the natural power of the place and to find the essence with finesse. It's pure Tempranillo that comes from three plots in the San Rafael estate, Viña del Olivo, San Gregorio Encina and Don Vicente, with different soils and orientations. The bunches were selected by hand and the grapes were sorted by an optical machine and fermented in oak vats with constant tasting to adjust the length and intensity of the pump-overs. It went through malolactic fermentation and 12 months of élevage in Seguin Moreau, Sylvain and Taransaud barriques, 50% of them new, 50% used. It is super young and showy, extroverted and expressive, a little lactic and creamy, with ripe fruit and a forward personality. It comes in at a moderate 13.86%, with a pH of 3.69 and 5.37 grams of acidity, parameters of balance and freshness, super elegant and sleek, velvety and with a dry finish. It has finesse and length. It has to be one of the finest wines produced at the property. A total of 2,800 bottles and 100 magnums were produced. It was bottled in January 2026. They will continue doing this wine every year in future vintages. The 2025 is already in progress.

Vintage: 2024
The nose reveals dark fruits, crunchy blackberries and violets. The palate is well knitted, medium- to full-bodied with polished, velvety tannins that focus toward the finish. Fresh dark fruit is very well delineated throughout. The wine is cohesive, as well as a polished expression of the Contino vineyard. It is already drinkable but will certainly age gracefully. It has vivacity and elegance, along with a clear sense of structure and a long, persistent trail of fruit on the finish. This is a collaboration between Contino and Vieux Château Certan’s Guillaume Thienpont from Pomerol. It is pure tempranillo chosen from three different parcels within the Contino vineyard. Drink or hold.

From: 2022, 2023 and 2024: The Rioja Renaissance (Apr 2026)
The 2024 Chorus (100% Tempranillo) marks the estate’s first wine of its kind, crafted under the direction of Guillaume Thienpont (Château Le Pin). Twelve months in French oak, 50% new, shaped its élevage. Fresh plum, delicate florals and pomegranate lead the nose, with a refined smoky nuance. On the palate, it is dry, plush and ample, moving with enveloping flow and layered red fruit intensity. Finely integrated oak and the precision of the 2024 vintage lend extra definition to the fruit profile. A modernized interpretation.

Nestled in a curve of the Ebro River in the Laserna village, Viñedos del Contino harvests grapes from an old vineyard planted across different strips of alluvial soil. Plantings span 60 hectares of Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Viura, among others. Viñedos del Contino is part of the CVNE Winery group. Jorge Navascués crafts the wines. They are classically styled, with modern twists achieved through refined aging and precise extraction. For readers unfamiliar with the region, Contino offers an excellent introduction to the signatures of the Ebro River: polished tannins and smooth textures.

The Drinks Business: 97+ Points
A wine of considerable grace and charm. There’s a subtle and delicate warm spice – cinnamon, a scratch of nutmeg – and dark plums, damsons, mulberries and bramble. Indeed, this is a wine composed of shades of dark red. It’s amply framed, but not excessively so and that gives this a sense of shape and calmness. It feels very natural and undemonstrative. It’s also very crystalline in texture for pure Tempranillo with a luminous mid-palate that helps one focus in on those delightful cedar and graphite notes. A wine that exudes harmony, this is deep and dark at its spherical core, with a lovely grip and pinch just before the lifted finish. Rioja with a Bordeaux sensibility.

Blood orange, red cherry, roses and peony floral aromatics, enveloping with grip and tension, reflecting the al dente character of the vintage, and the layered complexity of the old vines at Contino. Fragrant and finessed, expands in the glass over 30 minutes, maintaining its sculpted side but deepening to show richer spiced plum, campfire and liquorice. Aged in 70% new oak, 3.7ph, just 3,000 bottles. Celebrating 50 years of Contino ownership by CVNE, this wine is a collaboration between Víctor Urrutia and Guillaume Thienpont of Vieux Château Certan, alongside Contino winemaker Jorge Navascués. The fruit is drawn from three blocks of the 55ha vineyard, which are then vinified and aged separately. Hold +2 years or carafe 2 hours.
