About the Château Valandraud winery
Château Valandraud is the brainchild of Jean-Luc Thunevin, who made a splash in the 1990s with his revolutionary approach as a 'garagiste' in Saint-Émilion. What began as a small parcel in the Fongaban valley grew into a Premier Grand Cru Classé winery. The vineyards are located on clay-limestone soils and are managed with the utmost precision. Since then, Valandraud has become synonymous with bold elegance and technical precision, thanks in part to the dedication of Jean-Luc and Murielle Andraud.
Location and climate of the Bordeaux region
The vineyards are located in the eastern part of Bordeaux, near Saint-Émilion, a region with a temperate maritime climate. This climate provides an ideal ripening of both white and red grape varieties. The soils consist of limestone, clay and sand, which gives complexity and freshness to the wines.
Grape varieties and winemaking of the 2024 Virginie de Valandraud Blanc
The 2024 vintage consists of a blend of 40% Sauvignon Gris, 35% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon:contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}. This combination produces a wine with tension, freshness and a creamy texture. The grapes were harvested by hand in small crates and carefully sorted. After a cold maceration, the grapes were slowly pressed and the juice underwent a low-temperature fermentation.
Fermentation took place in wooden barrels, some of which were new. This gives the wine extra complexity and a subtle hint of vanilla and toast. The wine was then matured on the lees (fine sediment) for several months, which benefits the texture and depth of flavour.
Color, smell and taste of the wine
The colour is bright straw yellow with a slight green tinge. In the nose, notes of citrus, yellow apple, white peach and floral hints dominate, interspersed with subtle spices from the wood maturation. In the mouth, the wine is rich and fresh at the same time, with a lively acidity and a creamy structure. The finish is mineral and elegant, with a long, aromatic length.

A precise, flavorful Bordeaux blanc with drive and crunch. Sliced green apples, white peaches, subtle cream and some herbs on the nose. Medium-bodied, this has good depth of flavor and bright acidity. Textural and delicious with a mineral edge in the lengthy finish.

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Virginie de Valandraud is a dense, potent wine. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and a good dose of new oak lend notable richness to the Virginie. Readers will find a dense, opulent Saint-Émilion. This is in line with the style of the Grand Vin in terms of its flamboyant fruit intensity.

Wijnhuis
After a 12-year career as a bank clerk, then a grocer and restaurateur in St. Emilion before ending up as a négociant wine merchant, Jean-Luc Thunevin plunged into the adventure of Ch. Valandraud. In 1989, he decided to make his own wine with his partner Murielle and found a terroir on the hill of Fongaban (the name Valandraud is a contraction of 'Vallon' and 'Andraud', the name of his partner). In 1990 he didn't have chais yet, so he bore the fruits to the cooperative.
In 1991, they made the wine in a workshop of their house, which they called the "garage", an old winemaking cellar belonging to the Bécot family. This is how the term 'garage wine' was born, all the more so that the chai was closed off like a garage. Because Thunevin did not have large resources (for example, he did not have an ontrister) the berries were picked by hand, which was already a good selection at the time, after all, bad berries were already excluded. He didn't have pumps either, so he had to manually pour the berries into the cuves. The principle of gravity was forced to become a fact here. After all, he did not have large cuves and was again forced to let malolactic fermentation take place in small barriques, a system that is now also very popular. All these fortuitous factors contributed to a beautiful wine that received rave press, and which, although the terroir was not known, was now classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the new classification of 2012.
