Cantina Terlano Winery
Cantina Terlano, located in Alto Adige, is one of Italy's most renowned cooperatives. Founded in 1893, the estate combines Alpine precision with long aging and remarkable ageing potential for white wines. The focus is on terroir, low yields, and careful vinification. Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and Sauvignon Blanc, in particular, showcase their mineral strength thanks to the volcanic porphyry soils surrounding Terlan. More information about this winery can be found under the "Winery" tab.
Region and origin
Kreuth's vineyards are located on steep slopes around Terlan in Alto Adige, at elevations between approximately 250 and 900 meters. The stark contrast between warm days and cool nights creates aromatic purity and fresh acidity. The volcanic porphyry soils give the wines their characteristic minerality and tension.
Vineyards and grape varieties
Kreuth is made from 100% Chardonnay. The grapes benefit from abundant sunlight but retain their freshness thanks to the altitude. This results in a Chardonnay with a clear structure and refined aromas, without being overpowering.
Vinification and maturation
After gentle pressing, the wine ferments partly in stainless steel and partly in large wooden barrels. It is then aged on fine lees, which adds texture and subtle complexity while maintaining its fresh style.
Color, smell and taste
Bright straw yellow in color. Subtle aromas of spring flowers, melon, and citrus on the nose.
Light to medium-bodied on the palate with fresh, lively acidity. The wine displays a tight, clean structure with a savory, refined finish. No excessive oak or tropical ripeness, but an elegant and mineral-tinged style that focuses on balance and drinkability.
Drinking window and style
With 93 points, the Kreuth is appreciated for its precision and fresh character. This Chardonnay is already excellent to drink, emphasizing purity, freshness, and a lighthearted elegance.
Summary of professional reviews
The Kreuth is praised for its crisp acidity, subtle floral notes, and savory, polished finish. An elegant and taut Chardonnay that focuses on purity and balance.

From: Come Hell or High Water: Trentino-Alto Adige’s 2023 and 2024 Vintages (Dec 2025)
The 2023 Chardonnay Kreuth is remarkably pretty, blending yellow flowers with freshly sliced white peach, sage and stone dust. It is crystalline in feel, soothingly round and supple, with depths of ripe orchard fruits offset by crisp mineral tones. The wine leaves a saline tinge and hints of sour lime, tapering off lightly structured and long with a savory herbal thrust that lingers.

Cantina Terlano is known for its exceptional quality and encyclopedic portfolio that includes every key grape variety in Alto Adige. As a co-op winery with 43 growers working 190 hectares, Terlano's continued excellence from vintage to vintage is remarkable. Their wines compete with the absolute best of the region, in large part due to their close relationships with growers and strict rules. Touring the vineyards with the director of sales and marketing, Klaus Gasser, I noticed that not a single vine seemed diseased, nor were there any empty spaces where vines had died. Both are common in vineyards around the world. Gasser explained, “All our growers are incentivized to remove and replace any diseased vines as quickly as possible. We pay for quality, not quantity.”
Gasser explained how Alto-Adige differs greatly from surrounding regions because of the mountains and shifting air currents through the valleys. As a result, the team at Terlano found 2023 to be a more relaxed year, which shows in the wines’ balance. However, they weren’t as lucky in 2024. “Two thousand twenty-four was a hard vintage, with botrytis causing many problems,” said Gasser. Heavy rains during flowering, a short summer and a cool, wet September created uneven ripening and led to a complicated harvest. In the end, yields were down between 20 and 30%. The Cantina Terlano team also makes the Cantina Andriano range. Both portfolios are fantastic.
