Description
This is, of course, one of Anselmo Mendes's flagship wines: the 100% alvarinho from Monção e Melgaço. What makes this part of Vinho Verde so special is its proximity to relatively high mountains, providing greater protection from Atlantic influences. This warmth and less rain are ideal for ripening the alvarinho to perfection. The grapes for this wine are grown on the finest soils, on sunny slopes with poor, weathered granite soil. This results in a minerally wine with body and power, yet simultaneously a wonderful freshness.
The wine is made by direct pressing of the destemmed grapes. This is followed by a long fermentation at a temperature between 14°C and 20°C. It gains extra richness and structure by aging for at least another six months on the fine lees, the dead yeast cells, which impart additional flavors to the wine. In the glass, the wine is a bright straw yellow. On the nose, this Alvarinho from Anselmo Mendes has beautiful notes of tropical fruit, mango, flowers, and apple, with a hint of grapefruit. On the palate, the wine is soft and flavorful, opulent and invigorating, with yellow plums, lovely acidity, and a powerful, fresh, and minerally finish. Give this wine some time. It is certainly ready to drink, but with a few years, it will become even more balanced. A truly value-for-money recommendation for your wine cellar.

The varietal 2024 Muros Antigos Alvarinho is their entry-level Alvarinho, linked to Melgaço, from slopes where there's more granite and less alluvial elements, silt and clay, higher altitude vineyards and shallower soils. In drier years, the vines suffer more, but that's not the case in 2024. This has some austerity and a vibrant palate, serious, still elegant, floral and perfumed, varietal with restraint. It comes in at 12.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.14 and 5.9 grams of acidity, which means harmony and balance. 150,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2025.
I had a fantastic hour and a half with Anselmo Mendes between Porto and his Quinta da Torre in Melgaço, and I learned so much about Vinho Verde, Alvarinho and Loureiro that I couldn't believe it.
In 2023, they harvested at the end of August, but in 2024, they started the Alvarinho 15 days later, from mid-September, which makes a big difference, a slow ripening of the grapes in 2024. The difference was the temperature difference between day and night in September, which provoked a longer cycle, which means more development of aromas and flavors in the grapes.

Anselmo Mendes was born and grew up in Monção. It was, as a child, that he became acquainted with the culture of the vine and wine production.
The Alvarinho variety and the wine produced there immediately became a part of his life, to the extent that today Anselmo Mendes and Alvarinho are actually synonymous.
Anselmo graduated in Agro-Industrial Engineering in 1987, from the Higher Education Institute of the Technical University of Lisbon, and postgraduate in oenology from the Catholic University 6 years later. The philosophy of Anselmo Mendes is that every plot, every place gives the Alvarinho its own, different character.
