Description
Quinta do Ameal is located in an 18th century parish. At that time, wine was already being made here by the monks. The cellars have now been modernized and parts of the building have been converted into luxurious guest accommodations. The house has 30 hectares of land, of which 14 hectares are planted with the Loureiro grape. The remaining 16 hectares consist of beautifully landscaped gardens, woodlands and green riverbanks. Since 2019, the winery has been owned by the famous Esporão. Despite the fame and size of this winery, the authentic character and small scale of Quinta do Ameal are cherished. The house belongs to the top of the Vinho Verde. The wines are served in the best restaurants in the world and regularly win prizes at leading international wine competitions.
The Solo Único 2022 is a raw Loureiro with minimal intervention. It has only 1.5 grams of residual sugar, 5.5 total acidity and an extremely civilized 11.5% alcohol. It has had a malolactic fermentation and no SO2 (sulfite) has been added. The Solo Único is made from the typical Vinho Verde grape, the Loureiro, and it is a fantastic grape variety for complex terroir wine. The wine is powerful and intense and shows off its invigorating acidity. Lemon yellow in color. Modest but complex nose with aromas of red apple and gooseberry and elegant spiciness (leaf parsley, chervil). In the taste, the acids form the backbone, surrounded by a slim body, with a low alcohol percentage and a clearly salty touch. The wine has a remarkably long aftertaste, dancing happily on the acids mentioned. The wine could definitely use some aging and we recommend a drinking window of 2024-2036.

The 2021 Solo Único is an unoaked Loureiro with minimal intervention. This spent eight months on the lees, 70% in concrete eggs and 30% in concrete rectangular vats. It comes in with less than 1.5 grams of residual sugar, 6.1 of total acidity and 11.7% alcohol This, like the Loureiro, was only in bottle about two weeks. That said, if it is slightly disjointed, it shows off its fine structure and relative concentration, the big acidity cutting the fruit. This is not quite as aromatic as the regular Loureiro, but it certainly expresses the grape well and projects more solidity. The concrete aging may change the flavor profile a little, but that's just a small alteration. This is a brand without quite as long a track record as its siblings, but it seems poised to age well.
The winemaker for these vintages, now that this property was acquired by Esporão, is José Luis Moreira da Silva.

When you visit Quinta do Ameal you imagine yourself in another world. The centuries-old winery is located in the green north of Portugal on the river Lima, surrounded by conifers, walnut trees and citrus trees. The nearby Atlantic Ocean leaves its mark on the climate: an average temperature of about 15 degrees and abundant rainfall ensure a cool, wet climate in which only certain native grape varieties feel at home.
Such as the Loureiro, the grape in which Quinta do Ameal has specialized. In this special climate, on a subsoil of deep, fertile granite soils, it produces mineral wines with nice acids and a great aging potential. In order to bring out the character of the grape and the area as much as possible, the winery works according to organic guidelines. The grape and its terroir lead to elegant, fresh wines with little alcohol and a lot of fruit expression that can also ripen excellently. In this sense, the wines can be compared to Riesling of level from the Moselle or Rheingau and fits perfectly in the trend towards complex elegant ones which remain relatively low in alcohol.
