Description
Pai means father in Galician. The Albamar Pai is produced in the style of the wines of yesteryear. The young very talented Xurxo Alba makes different white wines based on the typical grape variety Albariño and this PAI is a mix of different selections in the vineyards and vinifies the yields separately, some with malolactic and others without, all coming from 2,500 liter oak foudres. Beautiful minerality in all wines thanks to the terroir of slate and limestone. Fraîcheur and purity go hand in hand, magnificent. Only around 6,500 bottles of this PAI were produced. The PAI is a beautiful Albariño expression, minerality and depth that become even more beautiful with some aging.

Albamar is a family winery that began its journey about 25 years ago. Albamar places great importance on the care of the vineyards and the production of Albariño wines with a unique character and a special personality. In 2006, one of the family's children took over the reins of the winery; Xurxo Alba Padín, dedicated body and mind to winemaking. From this moment on, the company is baptized with the name Bodegas Albamar, this is a fusion of the family name and the proximity of its vineyards to the sea, and in turn is integrated into the Rías Baixas.

The impressive 2018 Pepe Luis comes from grapes from five small plots from a grower. This is very balsamic, the most balsamic of the vintages produced until now... In 2018, it started fermenting in stainless steel and finished in a 2,500-liter oak foudre, where it matured with lees for almost one year. Without going through malolactic, it was not racked after it finished fermenting, but it was sulfured and that prevented malolactic. There are notes of bay leaf, almost eucalyptus—the vines are surrounded by eucalyptus trees, next to the sea, and the wine now has those notes. There is no oak, the foudre was third use and didn't seem to mark the wine. 3,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019.
At Albamar, they continue working in the same direction as before, but they are now planting more grapes to reduce the need to purchase them. Xurxo Alba Padín has planted one hectare of Albariño and has just purchased some more land (very expensive in a tourist area!) for future plantings. He wants to plant some more Caíño and Espadeiro. He's planting "parra" style, the traditional way instead of trellised, because he gets half a degree less alcohol and up to one gram more sugar. As for the wines, after a trip to Jura, he experimented with some skin-contact Albariño (and even some flor!), and that might be something that generates something new.
When talking about vintages, 2017 is a personal favorite of Xurxo, he likes it more than 2016, 2018 and 2019. He thinks 2015 is the best vintage, but he likes 2017 more. His wines have less alcohol, with very good freshness and a lighter structure; he thinks this might be due to the lower yields, with contained alcohol and good acidity. In 2018, he sees similarities with 2017, but there's more structure and volume, more ripeness, a little warmer for him. And he links 2019 to 2016, a little fresher but with lots of structure. The 2019s are quite approachable, as was the case with the 2016s, but the 2016s are evolving better than expected. I had a number of different vintages to taste, as some of the 2018s are not yet bottled, and the entry-level 2019 is already in the market.
