Description
A more than beautiful Riesling from Weingut Dönnhoff, which with its 9 Große Lagen is considered to be the absolute top in the region. This Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg GG comes from the very old and famous Felsenberg vineyard, beautifully situated on a steep southern slope. The vines grow under extreme conditions in a soil with weathered volcanic porphyric rock. The stony soil warms up quickly during the day, and provides very characteristic Rieslings with a spicy fruitiness and mineral acidity, internationally recognized for their distinctive beautiful aromas. At the heart of this fantastic vineyard is the Felsentürmchen ("little rock tower") which is also depicted on the label. The vines are about 25-35 years old and the mineral-rich Felsenberg grapes are always very carefully, selectively and of course harvested by hand. The wine region where Weingut Dönnhoff is located is the Nahe. The area is of course named after the river of the same name and has beautiful steep slopes with slate and volcanic soils that provide an ideal subsoil for beautiful mineral Rieslings. The Nahe mainly produces white wine, about 75% of which is mostly Riesling. The area has about 4000 hectares of vineyards.
This Hermannshöhle GG offers a clear, deep, intense and complex bouquet of iodine, slate interwoven with notes of lemon and those of crushed stone and wet gravel. Intense and concentrated, it has a sur lie character and concentrated fruit. Full, dense, yet salty on the palate, this Hermannshöhle Riesling Grosses Gewachs is a powerful, rich Riesling with a long, complex and aromatic finish with fine tannins and stimulating lemon bitters. The 2023 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling trocken GG opens deep, pure, intense and stony on the nose that is, to be honest, much more sophisticated than the Brücke GG. The wine is finely juicy as well as savory on the palate, probably not bone dry in terms of analysis but always in tension and never settling on the palate, as if it was just an idea of Riesling and not its materialization. This Hermannshöhle is not a cave (which it is only named after) but a bright Riesling ray to the heavens, a lasting flash of lightning from a thunderstorm that cannot be disliked or remain undrunk, even today. If you need a salty and spicy yet always seductively round palate-tickler now, please go ahead. But those who like to let the wine mature will not lose out. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in August and October 2024.

Incredibly refined and precise, yet with Grand Canyon-like depths and layers, this incredible dry riesling has a horizon-to-horizon spectrum of stone fruit, citrus and wild berry aromas, plus a touch of dusty hot soil as rain starts to fall on it. On the compact, medium-bodied palate, this side of the wine builds and builds to a giant crescendo in the almost endless finish. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Grosses Gewächs, from a south-facing shale site with just a few calcareous veins, is golden in color. The vines were planted in 1949, and they now bring just small yields of tiny berries with a different pulp/skin ratio. A gorgeous lift tells of citrus zest, with an ethereal touch of crushed citrus leaf and spicier herb. The palate is crystalline. It's a clear-cut, taut, pure vision of stone and citrus. This is a pure, poised, precise and concentrated wine. Time and again, it is astonishing that so much flavor, stone and energy can be captured in a wine of such taut proportions at 12.5% alcohol. What an experience! There is no reliance on power, volume or fat, just slenderness, elegance and essence. (Bone-dry)

Cornelius Dönnhoff recounts 2023 at the domaine: “Fruit set was good, and we could see early on that this might be a bigger harvest, and in summer, we started reducing yields relatively early. This, with canopy management, was key as the vines were vigorous. In July, the weather changed, temperatures went down, and we had continuous showers in July and August, and our well-ventilated canopies paid off. We also had interrow ground cover to help pull moisture out of the soil. We had pokered right. It ensured the grapes could dry off, and we could get on top of the immense disease pressure.” Later in August, the weather changed again, ringing in stable weather. “September was warm and had high sunshine hours, not a cloud from morning to night. This accelerated the ripening and compensated for the cool August. The thinned-out fruit and airy canopy meant healthy grapes and no botrytis.” Dönnhoff notes that in wetter years like 2023, his steep and rocky Riesling sites are at an advantage with their excellent drainage and poor soils, curbing vine vigor, resulting in a harvest of healthy fruit. Dönnhoff did not make BAs or TBAs but harvested small amounts of thrilling Kabinetts, Spätlesen and Auslesen, mostly from botrytis-free grapes. “In Riesling, you do not need alcohol as a transporter of flavor,” he notes. “The Pinots [Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder] were a different story,” he says. “We had to select aggressively because there was some rot.” Picking started on 17 September with the Pinot varieties, and they had to hurry because ripeness advanced quickly. Dönnhoff is happy that nothing “slid into overripeness”–apart from the Auslesen–and notes that the wines have good acid structure with moderate alcohol and that sufficient moisture meant great extracts. He also puts his wines’ strikingly golden color down to extract—yet another stunning collection.
