Description
Roman Niewodniczanski, who took over the domain in 2000 and completely restored it, is part of the Bittburger family. His drive for quality is unstoppable and his aim is to optimally let the various top terroirs (steep mineral-rich slate, sandstone and rhyolite) speak. For this, major investments have been made in the vineyards and the grapes are always picked late and manually in different phases at the end of October/November. Read more under the tab: Winery
The Van Volxem Schonfels Riesling Grosses Gewächs (GG) is a remarkable wine from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region in Germany. The Schonfels vineyard is located in the Saar Valley and is known for its steep slopes and slate soils, which contribute to the unique minerality and freshness of the wines.
The 2021 Van Volxem Goldberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs (GG) is a premium dry Riesling from the renowned Van Volxem winery, located in the Saar Valley within the greater Mosel region of Germany. This wine is classified as Grosses Gewächs, which indicates a high quality wine from a "Grosse Lage" (Grand Cru). The Goldberg vineyard is known for its unique terroir with soils rich in red slate. This soil structure contributes to the mineral and elegant characteristics of the wine. The location in the Saar Valley ensures a cool climate, which contributes to a slow ripening of the grapes and a pronounced acidity in the wine.
After a manual harvest, the grapes are placed in stainless steel tanks for maceration and final fermentation. This process takes between 6 and 7 months in total, after which bottling takes place without clarification. The wines are released in September following the harvest year.
The Van Volxem Goldberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs (GG) has a lively light yellow color and a rich aromatic scent, spicy with a hint of white pepper, minerality and a salty touch. Fresh, juicy and sour flavors with an elegant long finish. Perfect as an aperitif, with fish dishes (not smoked), ceviche, shellfish, sushi, light meat dishes and white poultry, asparagus, oriental spicy dishes and goat cheese, but also a wine to enjoy intensely without a dish.

The 2020 Goldberg GG is brilliant in color and aromas that show citric fruit intertwined with notes of crushed slate and quartz. Great purity and intensity here. Very elegant and refined on the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, round and lush Riesling with a long and intense, very aromatic and stimulatingly salty finish. An impressive Goldberg again this year. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021.
