EXCLUSIVE - WE EXPECT WINE IN OUR WAREHOUSE THE 3RD WEEK OF MAY 2026
Remelluri is one of the most terroir-driven estates in Rioja and is led by Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza. Their approach focuses on origin and historical identity, with a clear focus on vineyards around Labastida. The wines are made with great attention to detail and respect for old techniques, but with modern precision. Remelluri's white wine has become one of the most complex and characterful interpretations of Rioja Blanco. You can find more information about this winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The 2023 Remelluri Blanco comes from vineyards at an altitude of 605 to 805 meters in the Sierra de Toloño. This altitude ensures cool nights and helps to retain freshness, even in warm years. The calcareous soils provide tension and a distinct minerality. Despite the warm and dry growing season, the wine remains remarkably fresh and precise, with a light saline note typical of this terroir.
Grapes and vineyard management
The wine is a field blend of various white grape varieties from old vineyards around Labastida. This diversity ensures complexity and layering. Each plot is treated and vinified separately, allowing the final blend to display a broad spectrum of aromas and structures. The result is a wine that possesses both depth and refinement, clearly distinguishing itself within Rioja.
Vinification and aging
The different grapes are fermented separately and subsequently aged for approximately a year in used barriques, foudres, and concrete eggs. This combination provides structure without dominating the fruit. The wine undergoes sur lie aging, which results in a light creaminess and added complexity. However, the style remains crisp and precise, with a clear focus on the balance between texture and freshness.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a bright golden-yellow color. The aroma reveals notes of fennel, anise, and white flowers, complemented by ripe fruit and subtle spiciness. On the palate, the wine is layered and precise, with fresh acidity and a chalky structure. The texture is slightly creamy but is kept in balance by a distinct tension. The finish is long and refined, with a light briny and mineral touch.
Style and character
The style of this wine combines power with finesse and possesses a distinct mountainous elegance. It feels both broad and precise, with a beautiful balance between ripeness and freshness. International wine critics, including Luis Gutiérrez of The Wine Advocate and Joaquín Hidalgo of Vinous, emphasize precisely this combination of refinement, tension, and layering. The wine has something of a great white Burgundy, but with its own, more mineral and slightly briny profile.
Volume
The 2023 vintage was warm and dry, but yielded surprisingly fresh wines in the higher-altitude vineyards. The balance between ripeness and acidity has been well preserved here. With ratings of 97 points by The Wine Advocate and 95 points by Vinous, this wine belongs to the absolute top of white Rioja. The wine has a drinking window starting around 2026 and will continue to develop and gain complexity in the coming years.

2026 - 2038
The 2023 Blanco was produced with vines at high altitudes (between 605 and 805 meters above sea level) planted with different varieties that had different vinifications and matured in used barriques, foudres and concrete eggs for one year. The wines from 2023 show very good freshness, despite having been a warm and dry year, and this has some notes of fennel and aniseed, floral and elegant. It's more elegant and sharper, with a delicate mountain personality, not lacking power. It has 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.32 and 5.69 grams of acidity and finishes with a salty twist. It should age nicely in bottle. 8,440 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2025.
The Remelluri range of wines is small, with just the Grand Vino, a reserva, the white and the Yjar.

From: 2022, 2023 and 2024: The Rioja Renaissance (Apr 2026)
The 2023 Blanco Remelluri, a field blend of white varieties from Labastida, shows a Burgundian sensibility. On the nose, creamed corn, soft herbs and baked apple unfold alongside subtle marine nuances and a creamy lees note. The palate combines fine acidity with a chalky texture and layered creaminess, delivering both breadth and fresh energy. One of the more complex whites of Rioja today, it benefits from time in bottle to fully reveal its depth.
- By Joaquín Hidalgo on April 2026
Telmo Rodríguez and his partner, Pablo Eguzkiza, are among the clearest thinkers shaping the future of Rioja. Through Lanzaga, Cosecheros de Labastida and Granja Remelluri, the pair offers a vision of Rioja grounded in a deep sense of place. Their reds display finely judged aging and extraction, reflecting a philosophy that filters the present through the lens of the past. They aim to recapture the character of the wines made before the devastation of phylloxera. Among their many site-specific interpretations, the restorations of Las Beatas and Tabúerniga stand out. Rodríguez and Eguzkiza’s latest project, Cosecheros de Labastida, highlights individual grower perspectives, with each label bearing a unique name and style. Profits are shared, and the concept is clear: to return creative agency to today’s harvesters, echoing the spirit of past generations.

With Remelluri, Telmo Rodriguez is putting the Rioja on the map as a producer of original terroir wines. Long before the Rodriguez family settled on Remelluri, wine was already being made on the estate. As early as the 14th century, the monks here made wine from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. In 1967, the house came into the hands of Jaime Rodriguez, the father of pioneer and idiosyncratic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. Jaime immediately makes radical changes. For example, he decided to only make wine from grapes from his own vineyards, which was exceptional in the Rioja at the time. We also strive to cultivate the vineyards as naturally as possible, in order to preserve the special character of the vineyards as much as possible. In 2010, the vineyards were officially certified organic under the leadership of Telmo.
In the early 1990s, Telmo joined the company. The story goes that his father wants to keep the production of the red wines for himself, so Telmo comes up with the beautiful white Remelluri Blanco. After several years of making wine in other parts of Spain, Telmo returned to Remelluri in 2010, where he took up winemaking together with his sister Amaya. As a great advocate of terroir wines, he has a clear opinion about the wines of the Rioja. Because winemakers often buy most of the grapes from grape growers, they have lost the connection with the vineyards and the terroir, he believes. In addition, the low prices of the grapes have caused winegrowers to neglect or even grub up the more challenging vineyards, often the older, high-altitude plots. With the wines of Remelluri, Telmo wants to show that the Rioja has many different terroirs that can be beautifully expressed in the wines.
