Description
The Raen Royal St Robert Cuvée Pinot Noir 2023 is the second-best wine of 2025 according to James Suckling in his Best Wines of 2025 report.
A Pinot Noir of exceptional quality! It's no wonder this wine received 99 points for Suckling - see the Rating tab for all ratings and the full text.
With this Royal St. Robert Cuvée, brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi honor their grandfather, Robert Mondavi, who taught them to always strive for perfection. Carlo and Dante founded Raen Winery in 2013 with the goal of producing world-class Pinot Noir in the western hills of the Sonoma Coast. And believe us, they certainly succeeded with this wine.
This wine is made from a selection of the very best barrels, which offer a glimpse of the cool and rugged western hills of California's Sonoma Coast. On the nose, it has beautiful aromas of freshly cut wild strawberries, rose petals, and hibiscus flowers. The intense flavors of dark cherries, strawberries, white tea, thyme, sweet resin, and forest floor give this wine a full, spicy taste. It also has a mineral note (crushed stone). A medium-bodied wine with a long, full finish. 100% Pinot Noir, bottled unfiltered. The wine was aged for 10 months in 60-liter French oak barrels (10% new, air-dried French oak for four years and 90% neutral French oak barrels).
Suckling writes: "...A stunningly complex and vibrant wine that holds your attention from the first aroma to the long finish. Aromas of pine forest, rosemary, purple flowers, and black cherries are followed by flavors of black tea, pomegranate, dark cherry, dried raspberry, and wild mushroom. The fine tannins and fresh acidity give the wine a strong backbone. Drink now or keep."
Excellent wine with beef, veal, game dishes (venison) and poultry.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Royal St. Robert bursts from the glass with pure scents of cranberry, blood orange, Angostura bitters and cola, and as it spends time in the glass, it begins to reveal compelling foresty undertones. The medium-bodied palate is silky and bright with concentrated, crunchy flavors, vibrant acidity and a long, perfumed finish.

An amazingly complex, dynamic wine that demands your attention from the first sniff to the lingering finish. Aromas of redwood forest, rosemary, purple flowers and black cherries, then black tea, pomegranate, dark cherry, dried raspberry and wild mushroom flavors. Fine-grained moderate tannins and crunchy acidity give it such a firm backbone. Drink now or hold.

RAEN
Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Royal St. Robert Cuvée 2021
Beautifully defined, with pinpoint damson plum, mulberry and blood orange notes stretched out over a frame of rooibos tea and savory accents. Mouthwatering through the lengthy, unadorned finish, which relies on tension and purity. Drink now through 2032. 2,075 cases made.

From: Sonoma and Neighbors 2022 & 2023: Opposites Attract - Updated (Jan 2025)
The 2023 Pinot Noir Royal St. Robert is redolent of floral, savory and citrus notes. I find it especially brilliant and crystalline. At the same time, the 2023 is pretty tightly wound. Rose petal, iron, tea leaves, incense and dried herbs open nicely with some coaxing, The colder growing season brings out the slightly gamier, wilder side of Pinot Noir along with plenty of brightening acidity in this mid-weight, taut Pinot from Raen. I would give this a year or two in bottle at a minimum.

The 2023 Raen Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs will give readers a good idea of what the vintage is all about, as they very much reflect the character of a growing season marked by higher-than-average rain and consistently cold temperatures. The Chardonnays are brisk and tightly wound, while the Pinots are intensely aromatic, vibrant wines that embody both the style of the year and the preference here to work with a high percentage of stems. Brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi, along with Winemaker Melanie McIntyre, continue to turn out some of the most distinctive wines in Sonoma. The Mondavis recently signed a long-term lease on McDougall Ranch, a vineyard in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA that other producers have vinified with notable success. It will be interesting to see what Raen does with this fruit.

As winemakers and farmers, Carlo and Dante attribute much of what they learned to their grandfather Robert and father Tim, both of whom influenced them from an early age. Dante studied in Switzerland at Webster University in Geneva and at UC Davis in California. Carlo studied at the University of Aix-en-Provence in France and at the University of Milan in Italy. After their formal studies were completed, Carlo and Dante continued their educational work with the wine production team led by their father Tim Mondavi at Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One. When Robert Mondavi Winery was sold in 2004, the brothers joined their father Tim, Aunt Marcia, and Grandfather Robert when they founded Continuum in 2005.
In 2013, Carlo and Dante founded the Raen winery with the aim of producing world-class Pinot Noir on the western hills of the Sonoma coast. Raen is currently focusing on creating 3 Pinot Noirs, from 3 unique locations on the Sonoma Coast namely: Fort Ross Seaview, Freestone Occidental and the eponymous Sonoma Coast. Raen Winery is located on the cool and rugged western hills of California's Sonoma Coast.
