Platt Vineyard: an iconic vineyard on the West Sonoma Coast
Platt Vineyard is located near Occidental on the rugged coast of Sonoma County. Thanks to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, this vineyard is one of the coolest locations in California. The combination of misty mornings, cool sea breezes, and long growing seasons results in grapes with exceptional aromatic intensity and natural freshness.
The vineyard was established in 2003 by Lewis E. Platt and quickly grew into one of the most sought-after sources of top-quality fruit for renowned producers such as Littorai, Failla, Rivers-Marie, and Ramey. Today, the potential of this exceptional location is increasingly being bottled under its own name.
The Estate Reserve represents the estate's top selection and is composed exclusively of the best plots with mature vines. In 2023, the wine was blended from three carefully selected blocks that together optimally reflect the depth and minerality of the vineyard.
A cool growing season with exceptional quality
The 2023 vintage began with abundant winter rains followed by an unusually cool spring. Bud setting, flowering, and fruit set occurred three to four weeks later than usual. The cool conditions persisted deep into the summer, resulting in low yields and slow ripening.
A sunny but moderate late summer ultimately ensured optimal ripening without extreme heat. The harvest took place between October 4 and 26, exceptionally late for California. As a result, the grapes were able to reach full phenolic ripeness while retaining their fresh acidity.
The grapes were pressed as whole bunches, after which fermentation took place in oak barrels. The wine subsequently aged for fourteen months in 228-liter Burgundian barriques, 33% of which were new French oak. Through minimal intervention and hardly any bâtonnage, the character of the vineyard remained fully central.
Scent, taste and style
The 2023 Estate Reserve Chardonnay possesses an impressive aromatic complexity. On the nose, layers of nectarine, mandarin, yellow peach, and orange blossom follow one another. Behind these, aromas of fennel, lemon peel, lime zest, marzipan, ocean mist, and finely ground limestone emerge.
On the palate, the wine immediately reveals its exceptional class. The texture is strikingly chalky and compact, with a concentrated core of ripe citrus and stone fruit. An intense touch of citrus oil adds extra depth and richness without the wine losing its tension.
The influence of the wood is fully integrated, adding structure, length, and complexity without dominating the fruit. Despite its concentration, the wine remains energetic, lively, and extremely precise.
What truly sets this Chardonnay apart is the combination of power and refinement. The wine possesses tremendous concentration, yet remains simultaneously tight, mineral, and focused. The finish is exceptionally long, briny, and mineral, with a persistence that lingers for minutes.

Antonio Galloni awarded the 2023 Platt Vineyard Estate Reserve Chardonnay the maximum 100 points . He describes the wine as magnificent and praises the combination of mandarin peel, hazelnut, spices, richness, tension, and an almost endless finish. According to Galloni, Platt Vineyard is one of the very greatest Chardonnay terroirs in California.

The 2023 Chardonnay Estate Reserve is magnificent. Tangerine peel, hazelnut, spice, menthol, baked apple tart and pastry are some of the many nuances that open in the glass. The Reserve offers a captivating mix of vibrancy and textural viscosity. Creamy, resonant contours wrap up the plush close. There’s striking richness and mind-blowing overall balance to match a long finish that reverberates for an eternity. The Reserve is a blend of sections within three blocks on the property, planted mostly with variations of older Wente selections that are distinguished by longer hang times. It is one of several wines I have tasted from this part of the West Sonoma Coast that suggests Chardonnay may ultimately hold more potential than Pinot Noir. What a wine!

California does not have a formal system for ranking vineyards. If it did, there is no question Platt would be a Grand Cru. The vineyard was developed by Lew Platt, the former CEO and Chairman of Hewlett-Packard, and his wife, Joan, in the early 2000s in what is now the West Sonoma Coast, right next to Steve Kistler’s Occidental property. Sadly, Lew Platt passed away in 2005 and never got to see his vision for a top vineyard fully realized. It did not take long for Sonoma’s leading producers to grasp the potential of this site. Ted Lemon at Littorai, Eric Sussman at Radio-Coteau, Ehren Jordan at Failla, David Ramey and Fred Scherrer are among the winemakers who built the early reputation of Platt Vineyard through their stellar wines. A group of local investors subsequently purchased the property from Joan Platt and managed it for several years.
France’s AXA Millésimes purchased Platt Vineyard in 2022. Christian Seely, AXA Millésimes’ Managing Director, told me he first learned of Platt in a video that I did with winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown during the Vinous Live series of interviews we hosted during the pandemic. One of the challenges with Platt is that yields are often punishingly low. That means the only way to make the math work is to manage the vineyard as a proper estate, which is what AXA has done.
These first releases, from the late-ripening 2023 vintage, are nothing short of sensational. Winemaker Derek Flegal has done a tremendous job maximizing the potential of this great site. Of course, Flegal and the team benefit from the insights of consulting winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, who has a great deal of experience working with Platt fruit for his own wines. All the fruit was picked from October 4 through 26. Yields for Chardonnay were three tons per acre, but only one ton per acre for Pinot Noir. That is not unusual here. The Pinots were done with fully destemmed grapes. All the 2023s saw 14 months in barrel.
I have said it before, but I will say it again. Although the reputation of the West Sonoma Coast has mostly been built on Pinot Noir, I strongly believe many of these sites will ultimately prove to be even better for Chardonnay. Platt may very well be one of those sites.

Dagelijks trekt oceaanmist door de wijngaard, waardoor de rijping wordt vertraagd en de natuurlijke zuren behouden blijven. Temperaturen liggen regelmatig tot 10°F lager dan in meer landinwaarts gelegen delen van Sonoma.
Een bijzonder kenmerk van Platt Vineyard is de combinatie van veel zonlicht en relatief lage temperaturen. Hierdoor ontwikkelen de druiven een lange rijpingsperiode waarbij aroma's, kleurstoffen en tannines langzaam en volledig kunnen rijpen zonder dat de suikers te snel oplopen. Dit resulteert in wijnen met precisie, frisheid, verfijning en een uitstekend bewaarpotentieel.
Van druivenleverancier tot eigen wijnhuis
De geschiedenis van Platt Vineyard begon eind jaren negentig met uitgebreide bodemstudies. In 2001 kochten Lewis en Joan Platt het terrein en startten zij met de ontwikkeling van de wijngaard. De eerste oogst vond plaats in 2006, waarna de druiven jarenlang werden verkocht aan enkele van de meest gerenommeerde producenten van Californië, waaronder Ramey, Littorai, Failla en Rivers-Marie.
In 2022 werd het domein overgenomen door AXA Millésimes, bekend van onder meer Château Pichon Baron in Bordeaux en Quinta do Noval in Portugal. Vanaf de oogst van 2023 werden alle druiven gereserveerd voor eigen productie. In 2025 verscheen de eerste officiële jaargang onder het label van Platt Vineyard zelf.
Pinot Noir en Chardonnay op wereldniveau
De wijngaarden zijn volledig beplant met Pinot Noir en Chardonnay. Voor Pinot Noir wordt gewerkt met een zorgvuldig geselecteerde mix van klonen, waaronder Calera, Pommard, Swan, 115, 777 en 828. Voor Chardonnay zijn voornamelijk de Old Wente- en Clone 72-selecties aangeplant. Deze diversiteit aan klonen zorgt voor extra complexiteit en nuance in de uiteindelijke wijnen.
Alle druiven worden met de hand geoogst en afzonderlijk gevinifieerd per perceel. De vinificatie is bewust terughoudend, met kleine fermentaties en minimale interventie. De wijnen rijpen ongeveer veertien maanden in Bourgondische eikenhouten vaten van 228 liter. De Pinot Noirs worden ongefilterd en ongeklaard gebotteld om zoveel mogelijk karakter van de wijngaard te behouden.
Regeneratieve wijnbouw
Platt Vineyard werkt volgens regeneratieve principes waarbij de gezondheid van de bodem centraal staat. Het gebruik van herbiciden en pesticiden wordt vermeden en irrigatie wordt tot een minimum beperkt. De wijngaard profiteert van een natuurlijk ecosysteem met een grote biodiversiteit aan planten en dieren.
Daarnaast worden onder meer uilenkasten en zitplaatsen voor roofvogels geplaatst om plaagdieren op natuurlijke wijze te beheersen. Per perceel wordt gekeken naar de juiste snoeimethode, bodembedekking en bladmanagement. Hierdoor kan iedere wijngaardlocatie optimaal tot uitdrukking komen in de uiteindelijke wijn.
Direct indrukwekkende beoordelingen
De eerste jaargang onder het eigen label maakte direct indruk bij internationale wijncritici. De 2023 Platt Vineyard Estate Reserve Chardonnay behaalde 100 punten van Vinous. Ook de Estate Reserve Pinot Noir werd uitzonderlijk ontvangen met 98 punten van Vinous en diverse andere beoordelingen tussen 95 en 97 punten. De reguliere Estate Chardonnay en Estate Pinot Noir ontvingen eveneens uitstekende beoordelingen van onder meer Vinous, Decanter, James Suckling en Wine Spectator.
