The 2023 Outpost True Vineyard Immigrant is one of the most distinctive wines in the Outpost range. True Vineyard on Howell Mountain

Immigrant comes from True Vineyard, the high-altitude vineyard that Frank Dotzler developed on Howell Mountain at the beginning of this century. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,800 feet, the vineyard benefits from a unique combination of sunny days, cool nights, and a location above the Napa Valley fog line. As a result, the grapes ripen slowly and evenly, while retaining their natural freshness.

The grapes are harvested by hand late in the season, often in the early morning hours. The wine is not clarified or filtered, so that the character of the vineyard is fully preserved.

An exceptional blend

The 2023 Immigrant consists of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, and 28% Cabernet Franc. This composition creates a unique balance between power, elegance, and aromatic complexity. The wine matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 90% of which were new.

The 2023 vintage is widely regarded as one of the strongest Napa Valley harvests of recent years. A wet winter replenished water reserves, while a relatively cool growing season ensured slow and even ripening. At Howell Mountain, this yielded grapes with deep color, excellent concentration, vibrant acidity, and refined tannins.

Scent, taste and character

The 2023 Immigrant opens with an expressive and refined bouquet of ripe cherries, mulberries, blackcurrants, and plums. This is followed by floral notes of violets and dried flowers, complemented by nuances of cedarwood, new leather notes, dark chocolate, mocha, and spices.

On the palate, the wine immediately combines richness with elegance. The Merlot provides a velvety texture and seductive dark fruit, while the Cabernet Franc adds tension, freshness, and aromatic refinement. The Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone and delivers structure and length.

The tannins are remarkably fine and silky for a wine from Howell Mountain. Beneath the refinement, however, lies sufficient power and concentration to continue developing for years to come. The mineral tension and lively acidity keep the wine energetic and give it an impressive precision.

The finish is long, complex, and layered, with notes of dark fruit, cocoa, spices, cedarwood, and subtle mineral accents that linger for a long time.

Drinking window and food and wine pairings

Although the wine already shows much charm when young, it possesses sufficient structure to age for a long period. The expected drinking window runs from 2027 to 2050.

Preferably serve this wine at 16 to 18°C and let it age in a decanter for some time in its youth.
