Persoonlijke gegevens
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso enjoys a perfect location with its vineyards situated on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary, the Rio dos Patos, or the River of the Ducks. Consequently, the ducks on the labels are its trademark. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes, a luxury few vineyards enjoy, which partly explains why this winery can produce very fine wines, as there is never a water shortage. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region benefits from the influence of the ocean, which ensures healthy ripening, and the wind keeps the vineyards healthier without the need to use chemicals.
The Arche is the flagship and top model of Herdade do Sobroso. It is produced in very limited quantities and only in the best years. The Arche Branco is a new version that sees the light of day with the 2021 vintage. This beautiful Herdade do Sobroso Arche Branco is a blend of Arinto and Antão Vaz. The grapes come from special plots and selected vines. These vines are pruned very rigorously so that only a very limited amount (less than 1 kg) is harvested from each vine, but these grapes are of the very best quality. Everything in the process is done by hand. After fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine ages for 12 months in new 500-liter French oak barrels and undergoes a further 14 months of bottle aging in the estate's cellars.
In the glass, the Arche Branco has a beautiful golden color and an intense aroma, full of sensations of grapefruit, orange peel, honey, and spices. Intense, with tremendous freshness, perfect balance, and elegance, with a captivating and distinctive finish. The wine is already very beautiful to drink, though it does require decanting; however, it can also age well in the cellar for 10+ years and will refine even further. A beautiful acidity accompanied by lovely fruit. This is a wine for meditation and can easily rival a (much more expensive) Burgundy.
Fun fact : The Arche from Herdade do Sobroso is a tribute to the founder of Ginestal Machado. The name ARCHÉ is a Greek name meaning "Head," and together with the spelling of the E, this forms a "Tékton," which means "creator." Together, the word "architect" is formed, or the Head-Creator. |
Parker
The 2019 Arché is a roughly equal blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet aged for 12 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This is a nice blend, ripe but not overripe, fresh and tasty. It has a backbone but nothing astringent. It is mostly fruit forward, the blend showing some complexity and nuance. This isn't showing badly now, but it will be better next year. It may age another decade, more or less. It is well done and rather elegant too.
Filipe Pinto, winemaker, and Sofia Machado (sales, marketing) represented the winery for this report. They are also the owners, having purchased it in 2000, and husband and wife.

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.
Herdade do Sobroso history & location
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.
The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.
Which grape varieties grow here?
Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.
Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso
One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.
A few fun facts
- The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
- There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
- The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.
Herdade do Sobroso as an experience
Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
