Description
The Hans Wirsching winery is one of the most traditional and renowned wineries in Franconia. The family has been growing wine for centuries; since 1630! Today, the company is managed by Andrea Wirsching and Dr. Heinrich Wirsching.
On 90 hectares in and around Iphofen, mainly dry white wines from Silvaner, Riesling and Scheurebe are produced here.
Some wines are still bottled here in the typical Franconian “Bochsbeutel” bottle, whose name is derived from the word “book”, because it fitted like a bottle into the bag in which monks and pilgrims carried their prayer books. It has been a trademark of special Franconian wines since the beginning of the 18th century.
Hans Wirsching is the reference of Franken and the national and international wine press is also full of praise for their wines. Hans Wirsching works with great respect for nature and the environment and in a sustainable way.
The “Kalb” vineyard, located east of Iphofen, about 100 km northwest of Nuremberg on a “Keuper” soil; (sediment from marshy primeval forests). The wine ferments and ages only in stainless steel to preserve freshness.
The Hans Wirsching Iphöfer Kalb Silvaner Trocken VDP Erste Lage is a delicious dry, fruity Sylvaner. With aromas of hay, apple and melon in the nose. In the mouth the wine is slim, elegant, mineral, fresh with juicy acids and a long balanced finish.

December 2021 Week 1, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Iphöfer Kammer Silvaner GG comes from the center of the Kronsberg and opens with a deep, pure and intense, slightly flinty, reductive and herbal bouquet intertwined with ripe fruit aromas. Full-bodied and rich yet also very fine and provided with a delicate mineral freshness and finesse, this is a silky Sylvaner with fine tannins and a long and intense finish.13.5% alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in October 2021.
This was another impressive tasting at the Wirsching estate. The first 2020s, including the Erste Lage (premier cru) wines, are highly promising and so are the 2019 GGs (grands crus), which are released only after two years.
2019 was dry and very warm, but it did not have the long dry spells and temperature peaks like 2018 did. Some frost in the spring reduced yields but not qualities. The yields are reduced two to four weeks after flowering anyway, at least in the GG sites, by cutting away the top of the vines and their shoulders. The current collection shows once again that Wirsching can claim the throne of the Steigerwald district, where the vines root in deep Keuper (marl) soils. There are hardly any more expressive and powerful Rieslings and Silvaners than the single-vineyard wines from Andrea and Stefanie Wirsching. Klaus-Peter Heigel, who as cellar master has given the wines a new precision, freshness, depth and elegance, probably also deserves credit for the recent upswing. Possibly Wirsching has never been better than it is today.
