Description
Domaine Gérard Fiou is a French family-run winery in the eastern Loire Valley. It was founded by Gérard Fiou's ancestors and, after his retirement, taken over by the friendly Bourgeois family. This family is a leading producer of Sancerre and Pouilly wines: their expertise has been a valuable asset to Domaine Gérard Fiou! Wine has been produced in this region since the 15th century, with monks helping to develop the grape growing industry. The terroir of Domaine Gérard Fiou's vineyard was long considered too challenging for viticulture, but now all the winemakers in the area agree that it is the most interesting terroir of Sancerre AOP. The 24-hectare estate has belonged to the Fiou family for several generations. The vineyards are planted on the exceptionally rich silex soil near Saint-Satur. This exceptional terroir allows for optimal grape ripening by storing the sun's heat and releasing it evenly at night. The estate is completely organic under the management of Gerard Fiou and has been officially certified since 2010.
The vineyards of Domaine Gérard Fiou are located in Saint Satur, the town bordering Sancerre – along with Pouilly Fumé, the most famous appellation for formidable Sauvignon Blanc in the Loire Valley. The soil on the Sancerre side of the hill consists of Kimmeridge limestone. On the Saint Satur side, it is primarily flint. This gives the wines more minerality, slightly higher acidity, and therefore greater aging potential. The 'Grand Roc' is Domaine Gérard Fiou's flagship wine. It comes from the vineyard with the oldest vines on a flint-covered terroir near Saint Satur.
The Gerard Fiou Sancerre Grand Roc Terroir de Silex is a brilliant golden yellow. It has a complex, refined aroma of gooseberry, green apple, citrus, and white flowers. It has a pronounced character with a beautiful balance between fine fruit acidity, light vanilla notes, and stone fruit. The finish is intense and long-lasting. Le Grand Roc is the estate's flagship cuvée.

About Sancerre
Sancerre is the birthplace of Sauvignon Blanc, just as Burgundy is the birthplace of Pinot Noir: it seems the entire world is striving to emulate the excellence of Sancerre's Sauvignon Blanc production. Each wine region has its own unique characteristics, and it's rewarding to experience the expression of the terroir (and the winemaker's style) in wines made from the same grape variety grown in different areas, sometimes on different continents. Yet, Sancerre is the champion of its field. The Loire divides the region in two. On the left bank lies Sancerre itself, where the hills are rich in limestone and clay, with soils so chalky they are called "white soils" (terres blanche) because they become very light when dry. On the right bank lies the Pouilly-Fumé subregion, whose northeastern soils are richer in clay-flint. This soil type also occurs on the other bank of the river, making it difficult to draw a clear geological distinction between Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Gravel soil of erosive origin is scattered throughout the Sancerre region, thus ensuring optimal drainage; slopes contribute to the rest.

Issue 261 End of June 2022, The Wine Advocate
Partially vinified in barriques, the 2018 Sancerre blanc "Le Grand Roc" Terroir de Silex opens with a clear and discreet yet actually intense and substantial nose of ripe, white fruits, blackcurrant, lush peaches, white blossoms, brioche and iodine. Full-bodied, fresh and with mineral vitality on the palate, this is an intense, mouth-filling and sustainable Sancerre that indicates well-dosed oak management and an excellent silex terroir. The wine is powerful and complex and reveals a seriously firm structure with stimulating phenolics. The 2018 still appears as a young and vivacious, stimulating Sancerre, and it's less massive or rich than so many of its peers. This is an excellent wine indeed. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in April 2022.

A well-rounded, precise and focused Sancerre with aromas of quince peel, leaves, stones and hints of guava. It’s medium- to full-bodied with bright acidity and a dense core of juicy fruit and spices. Mouthwatering finish with excellent persistence. Drink or hold.

Gérard Fiou Sancerre Terroir de Silex Le Grand Roc 2019

Tightly wound and subdued at first, this broods with zesty grapefruit and peach flavors that turn silky on the dense palate, with notes of sweet bay leaf and white pepper. Though supple and round, this is grounded by a firm mineral core and a quinine note on the very lengthy finish. A stunning Sancerre. Drink now through 2030. 150 cases imported.
