The 2023 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles is one of the great white Burgundies of Puligny-Montrachet and demonstrates once again in this vintage why Domaine Leflaive belongs to the absolute world elite. Les Pucelles combines the refinement and chalky tension of Puligny with the richness and depth of a top Premier Cru. In 2023, this results in a wine with impressive texture, floral finesse, and a long, precise finish that will continue to captivate for decades to come.
Domaine Leflaive and Les Pucelles
Domaine Leflaive is undeniably one of the most iconic producers of white Burgundy. The estate in Puligny-Montrachet built its reputation on a combination of exceptional terroir, low yields, and an extremely precise approach in the vineyard and cellar. Since the 1990s, biodynamics has played a central role within the estate, a choice that has strongly contributed to the purity and terroir expression of the wines.
Les Pucelles is one of the most famous Premier Cru vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet and borders directly on Bâtard-Montrachet. Its location and soil structure make this plot one of the most complete terroirs in the appellation. The wine often possesses the tension and minerality of Puligny, but also the breadth and depth normally associated with a Grand Cru.

The style of the 2023 volume
The 2023 wines from Domaine Leflaive have a slightly more open and expressive character than some of the estate's tighter vintages. The fruit is slightly more prominent, while the characteristic tension, acidity, and minerality are fully retained.
For Les Pucelles, this means a wine with both immediate charm and great aging potential. The maturation followed Leflaive's classic approach: approximately twelve months in barrels, followed by further aging on the lees in tanks before bottling. This method provides extra texture and complexity without overshadowing the terroir.
Scent, taste and character
On the nose, the 2023 Les Pucelles opens with a refined and layered aromatic profile of ripe peach, citrus blossom, and white flowers. This is followed by notes of roasted nuts, subtle butteriness, chalk, wet stone, and a briny touch reminiscent of iodine.
On the palate, the wine immediately displays its class. The opening is rich and broad, with an almost silky texture that gives the wine volume and depth. At the same time, the lively acidity provides precision and tension, ensuring the wine never feels heavy or sluggish.
Flavors of ripe peach, citrus, almond, light toast, and chalky minerality flow effortlessly into one another. What stands out most is the balance between concentration and refinement. The wine has the breadth and volume of a great Les Pucelles, yet remains pure, transparent, and precise at the same time.
The finish is long, chalky, saline, and impressively persistent, with a combination of white fruit, flowers, roasted nuts, and mineral tension that lingers for minutes.
One of the great Premier Crus of Puligny-Montrachet
Les Pucelles has been considered one of the very best Premier Crus of Puligny-Montrachet for decades. In top years, the wine effortlessly approaches the level of a Grand Cru, especially when it comes from an estate like Leflaive.
The 2023 demonstrates this convincingly. The wine possesses not only the floral finesse and minerality that make Puligny so beloved, but also a striking texture and depth that give it an almost monumental character. At the same time, the wine always remains restrained and elegant.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles reasserts its traditional role as Leflaive's dominant premier cru this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, clear honey, white flowers and orange oil, framed by a deft touch of youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's pure and enveloping, with a sweet core of fruit, lively acids and a long, precise finish.
The 2022 vintage has turned out very nicely at Domaine Leflaive. Picking decisions at this address in recent years, under the direction of Pierre Vincent, have tended to privilege freshness, and a couple of wines appeared to have been picked a little on the early side if one's tastes lean toward the texture and plenitude that only full maturity can impart; but overall, this is a strong vintage that is developing a touch of noble reduction in bottle and which is going to age with grace. As usual, élevage began with a year in barrel (from a variety of coopers, including Séguin Moreau and Chassin) followed by six months or so in tank on the lees before bottling under Diam 30.

Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is a name that rings a bell. Chardonnay, tradition and progress come together beautifully here.
History of Domaine Leflaive
The story of Domaine Leflaive begins in the 18th century but truly takes shape in the twentieth. Joseph Leflaive, a former marine engineer, took over the family estate in 1905. After the phylloxera crisis he bought additional plots, replanted the vineyards, and started bottling under his own label. That laid the foundation for the estate as we know it today.
After his death in 1953, his sons Vincent and Jo took the lead. They strengthened the name both in Burgundy and abroad. In the 1990s Anne-Claude Leflaive stepped in. She made a bold move by converting the estate entirely to biodynamic farming. Since 2015, Brice de la Morandière, Anne-Claude’s nephew, has been in charge. He combines respect for tradition with innovations such as the sustainable cellar built in 2012.
Location in Puligny-Montrachet
Domaine Leflaive is located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, a small village in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This region is known worldwide as the birthplace of Chardonnay. The limestone-rich soil and perfect exposure create wines with tension, freshness, and depth. Here everything revolves around terroir: small differences in slope or soil type give wines with their own unique character.
Grape varieties at Domaine Leflaive
The focus is entirely on Chardonnay. No red wine is made. That may sound limited, but this dedication is exactly what made the estate great. From a simple Bourgogne Blanc to the most legendary Grand Crus: all come from the same grape, yet from different parcels. This way you taste the pure differences between soil and location.
Specialities and famous vineyards
Domaine Leflaive owns parcels in some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. Think Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. In addition, there are impressive Premier Crus such as Les Pucelles, Clavoillon, and Les Folatières. They also make a distinctive Meursault and an approachable Bourgogne Blanc. The latter comes from vineyards just outside Puligny and shows that even the entry-level wines at Leflaive carry plenty of character.
Biodynamic viticulture and cellar techniques
Since 1997 Domaine Leflaive has worked fully biodynamically. That means using natural preparations and following the rhythms of nature. No artificial chemicals, but full attention to the health of the soil. In the cellar the approach is patient: slow pressing, fermentations with minimal intervention, one year of ageing in oak barrels followed by six months in neutral vats. Since 2012 this has taken place in a remarkable cellar known as the ‘Egg Cellar’. This round building, insulated with straw and wood, is energy-efficient and designed to let the wines mature perfectly.
Interesting facts about Domaine Leflaive
- Before becoming a winegrower, Joseph Leflaive helped build the first French submarine.
- The estate’s Grand Cru Montrachet is only released after ten years of ageing in the cellar, so it can show its full complexity.
- Anne-Claude Leflaive received international acclaim as a pioneer in biodynamics and was awarded several prizes for her contribution.
