Winery Domaine Henri Bourgeois
Domaine Henri Bourgeois is a family business with a long history in Chavignol, the heart of Sancerre. The winery is currently run by the tenth generation and is known for its focus on terroir expression and precision. The vineyards are spread across the best slopes of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, with particular attention to calcareous soils. Sustainable practices are employed, with a strong focus on biodiversity and soil life. The style is pure, energetic, and focused on tension and finesse. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The Monts Damnés is one of Sancerre's most iconic slopes. This steep, south-facing vineyard lies above the village of Chavignol and is known for its Kimmeridgian marl, rich in fossilized shells. These soils provide pronounced minerality and a clear structure in the wine. The climate in the Loire Valley is temperate, with cool nights that preserve freshness and sufficient sunshine for optimal ripening. In 2023, a relatively balanced growing season resulted in healthy grapes with ripe aromas and retained tension, which translates into a wine of both precision and accessibility.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The grapes for this cuvée come from old Sauvignon Blanc vines on the steep slopes of the Monts Damnés. Due to the southern exposure, the grapes receive abundant sunlight, while the calcareous subsoil ensures natural yield limitation and a concentrated style. The combination of altitude, slope, and soil type yields wines with depth and a clear structure. Planting density is high, and grass cover between the rows creates additional competition among the vines, contributing to the intensity and precision of the fruit.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The harvest takes place at optimal ripeness, with only healthy grapes being selected. After gentle pressing, cold settling follows to clarify the must. Fermentation proceeds slowly in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatic purity. Subsequently, the wine ages for approximately 8 to 10 months on the fine lees, which provides extra texture and complexity without losing freshness. This approach results in a wine that is both crisp and accessible, with a clear focus on balance and tension.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a clear, light golden-yellow color. The nose opens refined with notes of ripe pear, lime, and subtle spiciness, complemented by a light salinity typical of this soil. On the palate, precision and liveliness are immediately apparent. The structure is tight but not austere, with a beautiful balance between ripe fruit and fresh acidity. The medium-bodied character is supported by an energetic acidic structure that gives the wine length and tension. The influence of aging on the lees creates a slightly creamy mouthfeel, while the finish is refreshing and slightly savory. The wine develops beautifully in the glass, revealing increasing layers, with a persistent, juicy, and slightly savory finish.
Development and drinking window
This Sancerre is already very accessible and ready to drink immediately, but has sufficient structure and concentration to develop further over the coming years. The drinking window is roughly between 2024 and 2028, during which the wine displays its freshness and fruit in the first few years and develops more complexity and depth later.

From: Sancerre: Combat Fatigue (Aug 2024)
Tasted a week before bottling in July 2024, the 2023 La Cote des Monts Damnés is a rather delicate style of this steep vineyard compared with the more muscular 2022. It focuses on pure, fresh fruit and elegance. This wine has been hands-off and made in stainless steel to concentrate on fruit purity. A tender flesh on the mid-palate plumps up its light feet expression. The acidity is only gently fresh rather than racy, but the chalky nature of its texture, a key to the Monts Damnés wines, offers line and length. This will hit the market in the fall of 2024. Expect a new, more modern label. It's also organic.
- By Rebecca Gibb MW on July 2024
Based in the village of Chavignol, Domaine Henri Bourgeois is one of Sancerre’s biggest and most savvy producers. The domaine received organic certification across its 70 hectares of vineyards in 2023. Not only does it have parcels in some of the finest vineyards in Sancerre, but it also produces wines from Pouilly Fumé and other Centre-Loire appellations like Menetou-Salon and Marlborough, New Zealand. The entry-level wines offer a clean, crisp, uncomplicated style of their appellations, but things get more interesting higher up the scale. Wines released onto the market in 2024 will have different names, so La Demoiselle becomes the JS-150 from the 2022 vintage. Similarly, the red Sancerre La Bourgeoise is now labeled ES-56. Henri Bourgeois wines are always solid, and the first 2023 releases show greater delicacy than the power of the 2022s.

Domaine Henri Bourgeois winery has been working with passion and care with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes for 10 generations to make wines with a unique expression. Every member of the family: Jean-Marie Bourgeois, Arnaud, Lionel and Jean-Christophe uses his knowledge and expertise to achieve this goal. The winery is located in the heart famous town of Chavignol, on the largest terroirs of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. The area is located at the headwaters of the Loire.
The pioneering spirit within the family ensured that in 2000 a winery could also be started in Marlborough, New Zealand: Wijnhuis Clos Henri. Here too Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir bloom on the large terroirs of this region.
Clos Henri is a special new project in Marlborough, started by the renowned Bourgeois wine family from Sancerre, France. There, his wines are marketed under the name of the founder, Henri Bourgeois. This beautiful company in Chavignol is one of the references in the Sancerre. Henri is no longer alive, but his children and grandchildren continue the house in a magisterial way. Based on partly own vineyards and partly purchased grapes, the Bourgeois family produces mature and classic Sancerres, totaling some 1.2 million bottles, with 72 hectares of vineyards at the base.
They were able to apply the knowledge they gained in the Sancerre about the cultivation and vinification of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir one-on-one in their special new winery in New Zealand. For this purpose, the family acquired 109 hectares of meadows in Marlborough in 2000, in order to be able to unleash their passion in another country. They chose the Wairau River district, in the river valley west of Blenheim, the central town of Marlborough. A logical choice, because the soil here is very poor, due to the old deposits of river boulders, and therefore perfectly suitable for planting Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. But at the same time, the location has been chosen so that some of the vineyards are located on the hills. As a result, three types of terroir can be found on the purchased land, which enhances the complexity of the wines. The wines of the different parts of the vineyard have a distinctly different character.
One of the reasons for choosing this particular piece of land was that it was still so unspoilt. There was a sheep farm here, and the land was never plowed or fertilized - there was really no human intervention whatsoever. That meant a healthy surface, ideal for planting a beautiful vineyard. While maintaining the biological balance, Jean-Marie Bourgeois first planted plants that would give the soil some extra nutrition to compensate for the shortages of certain nutrients. The first canes were planted in August 2001. Each year, six hectares of vineyards are planted, so that it takes a total of twelve years before the whole piece is transformed from farm to vineyard. This also makes it possible for the family to get an even better idea of the special terroir step by step, as well as to further improve and adjust the vineyard management where possible. In this way, a special vineyard has been created for exactly the same two grapes with which Bourgeois is also successful in Sancerre and its surroundings: Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. The first wines under the name Clos Henri were made in 2003 and the following years benefited from the special terroir of this new vineyard. A beautiful project, which already yields special wines.
