The 2023 Le Petit Haut Lafitte reveals fresh and dark aromas of licorice, smoke, dark wild berries, and violets. Medium to full-bodied, it is more structured and serious than Les Hauts de Smith, with a layered, textured mid-palate, a fleshy fruit core, and a long, salty, chalky finish. ABOUT SMITH HAUT LAFITTE
Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Grand Cru Classé estate within the Pessac-Léognan appellation that needs little to no introduction. The wines from this estate captivate many winemakers and critics, and the versatility of this remarkable terroir is to be celebrated. It is one of the few estates in Bordeaux that produces red, white, and rosé wines of outstanding quality. The property boasts a long history in Bordeaux, dating back over 800 years. It was originally part of the Du Bosq estate in the Graves region. The Du Bosqs were the first to plant vines on the Lafitte gravel plateau in 1365. The property was purchased in 1720 by a man named George Smith, who named it after himself, thus giving Château Smith Haut Lafitte its name. The property is currently owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard. The Cathiards purchased Château Smith Haut Lafitte in 1990, and that is when the true story of this estate begins.
Before the Cathiards' involvement, Château Smith Haut Lafitte was not a well-known wine producer. The Cathiards acquired Château Smith Haut Lafitte because they were intrigued by the vineyard's ability to produce both red and white wines. The Cathiards implemented a series of significant changes to the estate, discontinuing mechanical harvesting and instead hand-picking the fruit. The Cathiards also invested significantly in building their own cooperage, allowing them to produce 70% of their own barrels. They shifted their agricultural practices toward sustainability, and the property is now considered a leader in this regard. In 2020, they received a Robert Parker Green Emblem for sustainable viticultural practices. A blend of tradition and technological innovation governs the winemaking practices at Château Smith Haut Lafitte. It is one of the first properties to use Oenoview satellite imagery to find the optimal time to start harvesting in addition to using optical sorting technology.
The Cathiards have chosen to employ Michel Rolland and Stéphane Derenoncourt as consultants to oversee the vinification process in their state-of-the-art gravity-flow cellars. The barrel room is a haven of experimentation, resulting in a dynamic and complex wine. The Les Hauts de Smith Rosé is an excellent, affordable wine that surpasses its quality. This Bordeaux rosé is slightly fruitier than its Provençal cousins, but that doesn't mean it's not bone-dry, with a pleasantly thirst-quenching acidity. With a beautiful salmon color that shimmers in the glass, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is a delightful rosé perfect for warm summer evenings.

Classically composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, it is matured in 30% new oak barrels.
Since achieving organic certification with the 2019 vintage, Smith Haut Lafitte has completely transformed its agricultural practices. The estate eliminated herbicides back in 1991, dramatically reducing chemical treatments and initially experiencing reduced yields. However, advancements in technology and methods have since alleviated these challenges. The vineyard employs cover crops in central and western sections where drainage is poor, and hedges have been planted to foster biodiversity. Ultraviolet treatments are being tested as a substitute for copper sulfate to further reduce chemical dependency. The winemaking process has also been refined to be less invasive: reds undergo cool, extended macerations with periodic punch-downs, while whites benefit from whole-cluster pressing in an inverted press, enhancing structural elegance and vitality in the wines. Since 1995, the Cathiards have developed their own nursery in collaboration with Bérillon for massal selection, and the estate boasts an in-house cooperage, sourcing oak from Tronçais and Jupilles for reds and Loches for whites, which adds tension. In 2023, the result is a lineup of bright and lively wines, both reds and whites, featuring a firm, structured mid-palate. These could gain even further elegance with winemaking practices perfectly tailored to the specific terroirs.

The 2023 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte is another stellar wine from the team at Smith Haut Lafitte. It screams with Cabernet Sauvignon character. Inky dark fruit, blackberry, gravel, pencil shavings, crushed rocks, lavender and sage saturate the palate. The tannins will need time to soften. Small berries and thick skins yielded an especially serious Petit Smith Haut Lafitte that is quite impressive.

Château Smith Haut-Lafitte has 56ha of vineyard and is owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard. Since their purchase in 1990, the quality has increased enormously, thanks to the works in the vineyard and the investments in a state-of-the-art installation. In 2010 these efforts were rewarded by Parker with a score of 100/100 for their 2009 vintage. Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte is a very demonstrative wine, very balanced and extremely concentrated with great aging potential. Visitors to the castle can also have a very luxurious dinner, stay overnight or enjoy the 'vinotherapy' in 'Les Sources de Caudalie'.
Château Smith Haut-Lafitte is located in the commune of Martillac, near the city of Bordeaux. It is a very impressive Château belonging to the Pessac-Léognan appellation and it produces a wine classified as Grand Cru Classé from the Graves classification.
