Persoonlijke gegevens
The 2023 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Rouge confirms the excellent form in which this leading estate from Pessac-Léognan finds itself. The 2023 vintage combines the ripeness and concentration of a sunny growing season with striking freshness and precision. The result is a wine that effortlessly unites power and refinement, demonstrating why Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is currently one of the most interesting addresses in the appellation.
Château Larrivet Haut-Brion
Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is located in the heart of Pessac-Léognan, south of Bordeaux. The estate has a history dating back to the nineteenth century, but has undergone an impressive rise in quality, particularly in recent decades, under the leadership of the Gervoson family.
The gravelly soils of Pessac-Léognan provide an ideal environment for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Thanks to these terroirs, wines are produced that are known for their combination of structure, aromatic complexity, and refined minerality.

A special assemblage in 2023
The 2023 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion consists of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot. Due to the challenging conditions during the growing season, Cabernet Sauvignon played an even more important role than usual within the blend.
A notable choice in 2023 was the use of whole clusters during the fermentation of a portion of the Cabernet Franc. This approach contributes to extra aromatic complexity, freshness, and refinement in the final wine.
The combination of the powerful Cabernet Sauvignon and the refined Cabernet Franc results in a wine that feels both classic and modern.
Scent, taste and character
The nose opens with intense aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, elderberry, and ripe mulberries. These are followed by complex nuances of orange peel, mint, thyme, eucalyptus, and subtle floral accents of iris and violets.
With extra aeration, layers of tobacco, wet leaves, graphite, wet stones, and a refined smokiness emerge that is typical of the best wines of Pessac-Léognan.
On the palate, the wine presents itself as medium to full-bodied with an impressive balance between concentration and freshness. The dark fruit is supported by lively acidity and a refined mineral structure that provides tension and length.
The tannins are fine, powdery, and perfectly integrated. The wine possesses sufficient power and depth for long aging, yet simultaneously displays striking elegance and accessibility.
The finish is long, precise, and layered, with notes of blackcurrant, blood orange, herbs, graphite, and a briny minerality characteristic of the Pessac-Léognan terroir.
The style of the 2023 volume
The 2023 vintage in Bordeaux has produced wines with great aromatic expression, refined tannins, and striking freshness. At Château Larrivet Haut-Brion, this resulted in a wine that combines the classic characteristics of the appellation with exceptional precision.
What makes this wine special is the combination of power and transparency. The wine possesses sufficient concentration to age for years, yet remains energetic and refined at the same time. It is precisely this balance that makes the 2023 one of the domain's strongest recent vintages.

The 2023 Larrivet Haut-Brion bursts with aromas of cassis, coniferous forest, mulberries, orange zest and iris, followed by a medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered palate with bright acids and a succulent core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. This year, Bruno Lemoine and his team employed whole-bunch fermentation for their Cabernet Franc, yielding excellent results. This charming, well-executed Pessac-Léognan is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and the remainder Merlot (notably reduced due to mildew).

A complex nose of tobacco, wet leaves, elderberries, thyme and eucalyptus. The medium- to full-bodied palate shows delineated dark fruit with a smoky, saline and savory mineral profile, leading to a focused, precise finish. A blend of 75% cabernet sauvignon, 20% cabernet franc and 5% merlot. Needs to soften, but drinkable now with some aeration. Drink or hold.

From: 2023 Bordeaux: Signed, Sealed, Delivered (Mar 2026)
The 2023 Larrivet Haut-Brion is terrific, just as it was en primeur. A wine of polish, nuance and delineation, it dazzles from start to finish. Crushed rocks, blood orange, mint and pomegranate soar from the glass. The 2023 exudes purity and nuance, along with a compelling mix of power and finesse.

This château, located directly opposite Ch. Haut Bailly is a very interesting terroir of very good quality. The prices of the wines remain favorable for the quality offered. It is owned by the Gervoson family and Bruno Lemoine is its director. Since 2015, they have a new cellar master, François Gaudichon, who is an oenologist and has gained experience in the Burgundy region (Vosne Romanée). Since then, the advice has come from Stéphane Derenoncourt (formerly Michel Rolland).
The history of Château Larrivet Haut-Brion goes back to 1840, the year in which the château was first mentioned among the first plantings of Pessac-Léognan. To this day, the château has become more and more famous. After several name changes from Château de Canolle, to La Rivette and Château Brion-Larrivet, the winery was renamed Château Haut-Brion Larrivet in 1874 by the then owner Ernest Laurent, a Bordeaux négotiant (officially recognized and authorized dealer in Bordeaux wines).
In 1893 the winery was sold again and then it came into the possession of Jacques Guillemaud in 1941 and acquired its present name: Château Larrivet Haut-Brion. Today it owns approximately 75 hectares of vineyards on mainly gravel subsoil with sand and clay. Château Larrivet Haut-Brion produces about 4500 liters of red wine per hectare and 4000 liters of white wine per hectare and plants 7700 vines per hectare. This is 2300 vines below average and this greatly benefits both the intensity and quality of the wine. Her red wines age on average for 14 to 18 months in different oak barrels and then another 10 to 11 months — depending on the vintage — in the cellars of the winery.
