Description
Château Lagrange is one of the most prominent Grand Cru Classé wineries in Saint-Julien. The vineyard lies entirely within the Saint-Julien appellation and extends in a single block across two north-south slopes of Gunzian gravel. In parts, large and coarse, in others finer, this gravel is combined with sand or iron-rich clay, depending on the plot. At 24 meters above sea level, the center of the estate marks the highest point of Saint-Julien. The estate covers 182 hectares (450 acres), of which 118 hectares (292 acres) are under vine. Most plots have a drainage system.
In the glass, this Medoc is a deep garnet purple. On the nose, the Lagrange opens slightly closed, but as the wine swirls in the glass, cedarwood notes of cigar box, tar, pencil shavings, camphorsuckle, and fragrant earthy notes of plum, cherry, and a hint of yeast extract slowly reveal themselves. On the palate, full-bodied and bursting with black fruit and earthy accents, it still has firm tannins and a pleasant freshness, finishing with a lingering mineral note.

Wine Advocate 93-95/100 : “ A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Merlot, the 2023 Lagrange offers up aromas of dark berries, plums and cherries mingled with hints of pencil shavings and violets. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with good depth, supple tannins and a suave, vibrant profile, it's attractively seamless and complete ”.

When Matthieu Bordes arrived at Château Lagrange in 2006, he had the good fortune to take over a vineyard that had been extensively replanted in the 1980s and was just arriving at maturity. Since Suntory acquired this estate, no expense has been spared, nor has any selection been considered too severe. In 2023, Bordes and his team waited for the Cabernet Sauvignon on the plateau to attain full maturity after the rains and have been rewarded by a fine classic for this estate.

This is tight but has creamy, round tannins and a juicy character. Blackberries, chocolate and spices on the medium-bodied palate. Chewy and polished.

The 2023 Lagrange is bright, punchy and full of character. Red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol, liquorice and rose petal lend exuberance and freshness to this mid-weight Saint-Julien. Readers will find a wine of total class and sophistication. In a
word : terrific. Tasted two times.

The Japanese group, Suntory, acquired the domain in 1983. Marcel Ducasse was then recruited together with Kenji Suzuta to carry out the complete restructuring of the vineyard and a spectacular renovation of the entire estate. This first step was to mark the rebirth of Chateau Lagrange. After twenty years of dedicated work, as well as human and technical investments, Lagrange is once again one of the top Grand Cru Classé , focusing over the last twenty years on the production of refined, elegant and expressive wines, in the best Saint-Julien style but also with production methods that substantially reduce the ecological impact.
Located entirely within the Saint-Julien appellation, the Lagrange vineyard stretches in a single block over two north-south rises of Gunzian gravelly soil. In parts large and coarse and in others finer, this gravel is combined with sand or iron-rich clay, depending on the plot. With a height of 24 meters, the center of the domain marks the highest point of Saint-Julien. The estate covers 182 hectares (450 acres), of which 118 hectares (292 acres) are under vines.
