The 2023 Le Petit Cheval represents 10% of the estate's production and is a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In a way, this results in a Petit Cheval that is very much Cheval, meaning very expressive in the bouquet but less generous on the palate. The 2023 Le Petit Cheval, which sees no new oak, offers blackcurrant and raspberry fruit on the nose, with hints of hearth and light aromas of Earl Grey, all finely defined. The palate is medium-full with expressive Cabernet Franc giving subtle notes of green pepper in the background. Coherent, silky smooth and moderate in length, this is an attractive Le Petit Cheval that will provide a decade of drinking pleasure.

There’s depth of fruit, good structure and freshness in this black-cherry and chocolate-scented wine. It’s full-bodied, yet it tightens up on the finish. Toned, muscular and crisp. 10% of the production of Cheval. 50% merlot and 50% cabernet franc.

The 2023 Le Petit Cheval, which sees no new oak, offers blackberry and raspberry fruit on the nose, with hints of fireside hearth and light Earl Grey aromas, all finely delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with expressive Cabernet Franc that imparts subtle bell pepper notes in the background. Cohesive, silky-smooth and moderate in length, this is an attractive Le Petit Cheval that will give a decade's drinking pleasure.

The 2023 Le Petit Cheval represents 10% of the estate's production and is a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In a way, that results in a Petit Cheval that is very Cheval, meaning very expressive in the bouquet but less giving on the palate. Crushed red berry fruit, cinnamon, star anise, pomegranate and blood orange lend an exotic flair. Bright acids and persistent tannins appear on the finish to give the wine shape, closing with a burst of energy. Superb.

Cheval Blanc was one of the highlights of my April trip to Bordeaux. The wines are simply captivating. Technical Director Pierre-Olivier Clouet and his team did some passes to trim irregular bunches and open the canopies. Clouet was quite adamant in his view that yields are better managed through pruning than in dropping crop. Harvest ran from September 6 to October 3. Yields were a bountiful 40 hectoliters per hectare. Of the estate's production, 75% is Grand Vin, 10% is Petit Cheval, and 15% was sold in bulk.

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux 95 (2021)
"White pear, sage, mango and citrus set the tone for this vibrant and juicy vintage of Le Petit Cheval. A touch of fennel and anised bitterness on the finish contrasts with a lovely density through the mid palate, and the whole thing is given lift, salinity and spice from waves of subtle oyster shell, lime zest and ginger. Lingering finish, great quality. Very few Bordeaux whites have this kind of long barrel aging on lees, 10% new oak, spread across a mix of 600l demi-muids for 20% of the volume and the rest in larger oak casks in a range of sizes. Estate director Pierre-Olivier Clouet."
