the history of Château Berliquet

Château Berliquet is one of Saint-Émilion's historic estates, dating back to the 18th century. The château was one of the appellation's first registered winegrowers and has since built a reputation for quality and elegance. In recent years, Berliquet has come under the same management as Château Canon, leading to investments in vineyard management and winemaking. These efforts have resulted in a significant increase in quality and precision, making Berliquet one of the region's most interesting Grand Cru Classés.

the terroir of saint-émilion

Berliquet's vineyards are located on the western slopes of the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau. The terroir is more diverse than that of Canon, consisting of a mix of limestone, clay, and sandy soils. This variety gives the wines a combination of ripe fruit, floral elegance, and refined mineral notes. Thanks to their location, the vines benefit from optimal sunshine and excellent water management, allowing them to ripen high-quality grapes.

the new cellar and the 2023 vintage

The 2023 harvest marked a significant milestone for Berliquet: it was the first vintage produced in the new cellar. It boasts twice as many tanks as before, allowing the different plots to be vinified separately. This allows the terroir's diversity to be expressed with greater precision. The growing season yielded healthy grapes with excellent balance and aromatic expression.

vinification and style

Berliquet's vinification focuses on preserving elegance and freshness. By fermenting the plots separately, each part of the terroir can develop to its full potential. Maturation takes place in French oak barrels, supplemented with concrete and amphora elements for additional layering. The result is a wine that is powerful and concentrated, yet simultaneously silky and refined in texture.

color, smell and taste

The 2023 Berliquet opens with aromas of cherries, black raspberries, violets, and a hint of licorice. On the palate, it reveals itself as medium to full-bodied, with a core of ripe fruit and a layered, almost pillowy texture. The tannins are refined and chalky, providing structure without harshness. Lively acidity brings freshness and tension, while the finish remains long and elegant. It is a wine that subtly combines charm and power.

reviews and potential

The 2023 vintage was rated 93-95 by The Wine Advocate. William Kelley emphasized the precision and refinement made possible by the new winery, praising the balance of fruit, structure, and freshness. The wine is already seductive, but also has considerable aging potential. In the coming decades, it will continue to deepen and develop even more complexity.

Rooted on the limestone plateau, on the western slope of Saint-Emilion, Château Berliquet overlooks the Dordogne River in the distance. In this hilly landscape, undulating under the Atlantic breeze, where the scent of Mediterranean trees mingles with the scents of the ocean, the vineyards exude a very special atmosphere.
