Persoonlijke gegevens
The Cathiard family, owners of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, joined the club of Bordeaux winemakers based in California. The estate was founded in 1885 by two brothers from Scotland, James and William Rennie. The estate changed hands after Prohibition and again in the 1970s, until it was purchased by the Cathiard family in 2020. The cultivation of the vines and the production of the wines are carried out according to the same values as at Château Smith Haut Lafitte: a deep respect for nature and its beauty, meticulous work on the vines, and traditional know-how that plays an important role for innovation. This estate, located in Rutherford, boasts 25 hectares of vineyards.
Cathiard Vineyard originates from the Rutherford and St. Helena AVAs and is situated at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, where winemakers have been cultivating the land for over a century. Cathiard Vineyard expresses the individuality of this unique terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand from Cathiard's oldest vineyard on a hill. As soon as the grapes reach the cellar, they are carefully destemmed and sorted to ensure that the best whole berries are used. The grapes are transferred by gravity to fermentation tanks and left to chill for up to 5 days. During the fermentation process, gentle manipulations involving pump-overs and punch-downs are performed to improve extraction. After 30 days in tanks, the wine is racked, pressed, and undergoes natural malolactic fermentation in new French oak.

The 2023 Cathiard Vineyard Proprietary Red was presented as an approximate blend in August 2025. It was scheduled to be racked and blended into tank in September, then bottled in December. All Cabernet Sauvignon at this point, it's a vibrant, lively effort, with black raspberries and black cherries framed by subtle oak shadings. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and tightly knit without being austere, it delivers super length and impressive silkiness on the finish.
The biggest development at this French-owned property is that the in-house cooperage is now operational. Staves are aged and shaped in France, then assembled into barriques and toasted here. The 2025 vintage will include the first barrels; but it's a one-man show, so for at least this vintage, the supply will still be supplemented by barrels from additional suppliers.
In the vineyards, four acres of Malbec have been replaced by a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, planted in five blocks to follow soil changes more carefully than in the past. Many of the existing blocks have had cross arms added to allow for more protection of the fruit. Cover crops vary from parcel to parcel, depending on the soil type. While the previous owners irrigated frequently in small volumes many times, the current practice is to only apply water when vines are stressed, but in larger volumes.
The 2022s were bottled in December 2024, and most have already been released. The flagship wine comes out in the fall. According to Justine Labbé, general manager and head winemaker, much of the growing season was pretty easy. "Then we had a massive heat wave in early September—we had 110 degrees for like 10 days, it was even warm at night. Some blocks shut down, and it took a while for the maturities to progress.
"We're lucky to be on the side of the valley where we don't have afternoon sun. At least we were able to keep reasonable freshness in the wines, despite the heat spike. Overall, '22 is not a plush, opulent vintage for us; it's more restrained."
While all of the wines at Cathiard are of high quality, the top wine comes from the property's oldest vines, planted in 1980 and 1983 on the hillsides above the winery. An early look at a preliminary blend of the 2023 looks to represent an even higher level of quality, so it is exciting to see the evolution of this estate.

Aromas of blueberries, graphite, iodine, oyster shells, bark and mushrooms come through clearly. Medium-bodied, succulent and juicy with fine, chewy tannins. Extremely long and rather endless. Pure old-vine Cabernet character. Gorgeous now, but better in a few years.

Cathiard Family Estate in Napa Valley
Interessante feitjes over Cathiard Family Estate
