In the beautiful Constantia area, Owner Lars Maack and winemaker Brad Paton actually only produce wines in the top segment: fresh and full wines. The slowly ripening climatic conditions with cold nights and modest daytime temperatures translate into fresh, crisp and full wines.

The Buitenverwachting Buiten Blanc is without a doubt one of the most popular South African wines in wine bars and restaurants all over the world and rightly so, simply a very well made fresh white blend of Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of viognier. The wine has not had any wood aging and has been matured for 100% in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and this gives and keeps the wine its freshness and crispness. This Buiten Blanc is surprisingly full with aromas of fruit in the nose and mouth, including ripe gooseberries, green melon and tropical fruit, supplemented with peppers. The addition of the Chenin Blanc grape gives this wine complexity and some 'spicy' aromas. This is a delicious aperitif and delicious with or with fresh salads, dishes with chicken and fish dishes (without a butter or cream sauce).

Sushi and sashimi with lime and soy

Examples: Maki with tuna or salmon, sashimi with ponzu, or nigiri with wasabi and pickled ginger.

Why this is a good fit:
The wine has sufficient acidity and aroma to accompany the delicate flavours of raw fish. The freshness is refreshing and cleansing between bites.

Roasted fish with herbs or citrus

Examples: Sea bass with lemon and parsley, cod with a green herb crust, or trout with dill and lime.

Why this is a good fit:
The aromatic intensity of the wine enhances the taste of fish, while the acids freshen the dish. An elegant match where the wine does not dominate.

Thai or Vietnamese dishes with lime, coriander and chili

Examples: Thai shrimp salad, Vietnamese spring rolls or chicken with lemongrass and coconut milk.

Why this is a good fit:
The freshness and aromatic power of the wine are perfect to combine with spicy, spicy dishes. The acids soften the fire and accentuate the exotic spices.

Grilled vegetable dishes or light pastas

Examples: Grilled zucchini with lemon oil, pasta with green asparagus and Parmesan, or risotto with peas and mint.

Why this is a good fit:
The fresh and green flavours in the dish complement the lively character of the wine. The wine adds freshness and aromatic depth without being overpowering.

Wijnhuis

The history of the South African winery Buitenverwachting goes back to 1773. Wijnhuis Buitenverwachting introduced the concept of environmentally friendly agriculture, which is better for the land, the worker and less pollution. From 1773, this winery has had no fewer than 16 owners, some of whom have faced many debts.

Despite this history, the winery flourished in 1825, led by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete, brother of the famous Henry of Constantia. In 1981, when the winery was owned by the Mueller family, the vineyards were explored, which led to extensive replanting of the various vineyards. This led to the largest harvest ever for Buitenverwachting in 1985. The winery has since undergone many modernizations, including a completely renovated winery.
