Description
The Cap Maritime Chardonnay from Boekenhoutskloof has beautiful aromas of oak, citrus, ripe yellow fruit, mandarin peel, melon, and a light spiciness. The wine is medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a lovely balance between ripeness and freshness. You'll taste green apple, citrus, and a tingling saltiness. It finishes with a pleasantly long finish. This is a very well-made Chardonnay from a South African cool climate that would be a perfect addition to a Burgundy blind tasting. It has a 92/100 Parker rating, and only 4,500 bottles of this Burgundy from Hemel en Aarde were produced.
The wine is made by pressing the whole bunches and fermenting them with the naturally occurring yeasts, 70% in oak barrels and 30% in concrete eggs (the latter not malolactically fermented).
Boekenhoutskloof is a high-profile winery in Franschhoek, particularly impressive in terms of quality. Despite its somewhat unusual Afrikaans name for the "French" Franschhoek, Boekenhoutskloof was founded three centuries ago by French Huguenots. Current winemaker Marc Kent also retains a strong connection to France. He visits at least once a year to find new inspiration in Cornas, the northern Rhône region. In 2020, Boekenhoutskloof was voted the best winery in South Africa by Platter.
Fun fact: On the head of the capsule, you'll find an image of a slender dam. This is the symbol of Boekenhoutskloof and is a reworking of an early silver mark from the Cape of Good Hope. She carries the dove of peace and hope. She guards Boekenhoutskloof and represents intrinsic quality that transcends all else.
About Heaven and Earth Valley
Boekenhoutskloof is located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. It's about twenty kilometers from Hermanus, the coastal town on Walker Bay, also known as the "whale capital" of South Africa. The Atlantic Ocean not only ensures the whales happily bob around here, but also creates an ideal climate for viticulture. It's warm, but rarely exceeds thirty degrees Celsius during the growing season. This is due to the fresh sea breeze and the fact that the vineyards are situated slightly higher than most vineyards in the area. The grapes are given the opportunity to ripen optimally, while retaining their fresh acidity thanks to the cool nights. The soil also plays a significant role in this. The vineyards have a clay-derived slate soil called Bokkeveld. This prevents water stress and makes the vines less vigorous, which in turn contributes to the slow ripening of the grapes (due to the slow release of groundwater).

The Boekenhoutskloof 2023 Upper Hemel-En-Aarde Valley Chardonnay Cap Maritime comes from a 15-hectare parcel on sandstone planted five or six years ago. Grapes from other patches of Burgundian clones are added into the blend. Winemaking takes an oxidative approach, resulting in a creamy quality with vanilla and stone fruit, backed by a taut saline finish. This spicy wine sees long aging in new and neutral oak to obtain mid-palate richness. Proprietor Marc Kent believes in great white wines with aging potential. This is a 5,000-bottle production.
Boekenhoutskloof is the Marc Kent project that draws fruit from the same 180-hectare Swartland estate farmed by Porseleinberg. Ten percent of the fruit goes to that second boutique brand, and the rest goes here and its extremely popular The Chocolate Block wine. This historic Franschhoek estate was founded in 1776 and revitalized in 1993 to focus on Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Sémillon and Viognier.

From: South Africa: Where Are We Now? (Sep 2024)
The 2023 Chardonnay comes from Upper Hemel-en-Aarde and was aged in 50% new oak for 14 months. It has a clean, fresh, slightly appley bouquet that is simple but well defined. The palate is well balanced with fine depth, developing light peachy, leesy notes toward a finish that displays ample weight and freshness. This has gone up a gear from previous vintages, partly due to a change in sourcing of fruit.
- By Neal Martin on August 2024
The estate was quiet when I visited winemaker Gottfried Mocke at the far end of the Franschhoek Valley. Most wineries in this part of the Cape are geared towards tourism since the landscape here is pure eye candy, a magnet for tourists. Sometimes, that can seem to be the priority over wine quality. Fortunately, Boekenhoutskloof is not “most wineries”. The quality of its wines is so ahead of the rest that you have to wonder why more Franschhoek-based estates cannot produce wines of similar caliber. Part of the reason is simple… They don’t have to. There are plenty of undiscerning palates flocking to this part of the Cape. Underlying the success of Boekenhoutskloof is Mocke. I first met him when he worked over at Chamonix. He was clearly a gifted, perhaps fastidious winemaker the first time we met a few vintages ago. Boekenhoutskloof manages to balance large volume commercial labels, not least their flagship and über-successful “The Chocolate Block”, with limited releases designed for connoisseurs, like their Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, age-worthy Semillon and, wisely operating as a separate entity under Callie Louw, Porseleinberg. “New parcels will come into The Chocolate Block,” Mocke told me. “Last week, we completed our OXO-Line system that can hold 6,000 barrels. One of the biggest markets for The Chocolate Block is Nigeria.” Mocke also told me that they have harvested their first what he called ‘proper crop’ for their Cape Maritime Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and will be put into barrel this year.

Boekenhoutskloof Wines
Boekenhoutskloof is a prominent winery in Franschhoek that impresses, above all, with its exceptional quality. Despite its somewhat unusual Afrikaans name for the ‘French’ Franschhoek, Boekenhoutskloof was founded over three centuries ago by French Huguenots.
Current winemaker Marc Kent maintains strong ties with France. He visits at least once a year, particularly to Cornas in the northern Rhône, to draw fresh inspiration. Marc Kent, Managing Partner & Technical Director of Boekenhoutskloof, is a maverick spirit and the driving force behind the various brands and estates within the Boekenhoutskloof stable. Unafraid to experiment with the unconventional, his primary focus remains on delivering quality at every level and in every detail. Marc is just as committed to the ongoing development and growth of Boekenhoutskloof as he is to the broader South African wine industry. Since its inception, he has been actively involved with the Franschhoek Wine Valley Tourism Association as a board member and has chaired the Vignerons de Franschhoek multiple times. Through Boekenhoutskloof’s investments in the Swartland wine region, he became one of the founders of the Swartland Revolution and the Swartland Independent Producers Association.
Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa’s most renowned wineries, located in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley. Since its establishment in 1776, the estate has been known for its elegant, characterful wines where terroir and tradition take center stage. From iconic blends to refined single varietals, this winery offers a broad selection of top-tier wines.
Fun fact: On the top of each bottle’s capsule, you’ll find an image of a slender female figure. She is the emblem of Boekenhoutskloof, inspired by an early Cape of Good Hope silver mark, carrying the dove of peace and hope. She stands guard over Boekenhoutskloof and symbolizes intrinsic quality above all else.
About Boekenhoutskloof
The name Boekenhoutskloof translates to "ravine of the Boekenhout," referring to a native Cape beech tree prized for fine furniture. Nestled at the foot of the Groot Drakenstein mountains, the vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate and rich soil structure. Under the guidance of winemaker Marc Kent, Boekenhoutskloof blends traditional winemaking techniques with modern insights.
At home in Franschhoek, Marc Kent has made a name for himself with standout wines such as Boekenhoutskloof Semillon, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon—each ranked among South Africa’s very best. But Kent has more arrows in his quiver. Alongside these limited-production flagship wines, he also produces exceptionally appealing wines under the Porcupine Ridge and The Wolftrap labels, making quality accessible to a broader audience. At a higher level, the famed The Chocolate Block also belongs to this portfolio. In 2020, Boekenhoutskloof was named Winery of the Year by Platter’s Wine Guide.
Climate and Vineyards of Boekenhoutskloof
Key grape varieties include Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Semillon, each carefully selected and vinified to express the best of the region.
Boekenhoutskloof’s vineyards are spread across Franschhoek and the Swartland region, each offering a unique terroir. In Franschhoek, the vines benefit from a temperate Mediterranean climate, with cool sea breezes ensuring slow ripening and freshness. The soils here consist of granite and slate, contributing to the wines’ minerality and complexity.
In Swartland (where, among others) the Syrah is grown, the climate is warmer and drier. Old bush vines, deeply rooted in the region’s poor, schist-rich soils, yield concentrated grapes with powerful aromas and impressive structure. This blend of terroirs gives Boekenhoutskloof wines their hallmark balance of power and elegance.
