How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inThis Vetus from Bodegas Vetus comes from the best vineyards of the Bodega located in the DO Toro. The vineyards are around 20 hectares and are located at an altitude of 700 meters. The climate is continental with influence from the sea. Vetus comes from the Latin word veto - vetare, which means 'forbidden, not allowed'.
Vetus is located in the heart of the rapidly emerging wine region of Toro. It is an example of the potential of this region and the modern wines that are made there. Lots of fruit and concentration. The Artevino Group (Vina Izadi, Villacreces, Orben) works with Bodegas Vetus in Toro and chooses to make wines based on the grape Tinta de Toro (the local Tempranillo). The favorite Pruno wine is the brother (or sister) of the Vetus.
The Vetus is made from 100% Tinta de Fino (Tempranillo clone) grapes that were picked by hand in October. The wine was aged for 12 months in new French oak barrels. The wine has a beautiful dark cherry color and delicious aromas of ripe black fruit on the nose. Pleasant in the mouth with notes of red fruit and coffee. A very pleasant finish with compote and liquorice in the aftertaste. The oak is well integrated with the fruit. Around 17,000 bottles of this Vetus were produced. This is a wine with a very attractive price point for Toro standards. Recommended!

The 2023 Vetus is dark and has notes of black fruit, graphite and coal, with a spicy twist. It's ripe and powerful but also balanced. It has fine-grained tannins and a chalky texture. From different vineyards and a year with higher yields and more acidity than 2022, it's concentrated and ripe at 14.92% alcohol, with a pH of 3.68 and 5.97 grams of acidity. It matured in barrels, one-third new, for 14 months. 20,472 bottles and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2025.
Vetus is the project in Toro from the Antón family from Izadi and Villacreces. They've had a similar trajectory here as in Villacreces, certifying their vineyards in organic farming and, since 2022, adjusting harvesting dates and lowering the influence of oak in their wines, trying to contain ripeness too. Here, they have 20 hectares that were planted in 1999 around the winery in Villabuena del Puente, 14 hectares of old head-pruned vines in other villages and a special plot from 1920, called La Lola, on sandy soils with boulders planted with Tinta de Toro and 15% Garnacha. Production averages 150,000 bottles.
In 2024, a wet winter and mild autumn advanced the cycle, but an April frost and summer heat spikes reduced yields and produced a small, early harvest with higher acidity and good color. As for 2023, a wet flowering period caused poor fruit set, followed by a dry summer and late-summer heat that slowed ripening, leading to a small, early-September harvest under pressure from early autumn rains.

Pine cones, dark spices, incense and sandalwood to the deep blackberries. The full-bodied palate is charged with black fruit, chocolate and plenty of dusty tannins. Very powerful and densely packed. Long and compact finish. Needs two to three years to mature. Better from 2025.

From: Duero: From Ribera to Toro via Rueda (And a Few Other Detours) (Jun 2025)
The 2020 Vetus blends Tempranillo and Garnacha from Toro and was aged in 225-liter and 500-liter barrels for up to a year. Ripe fruit leads the nose with a gentle sun-drenched tone and a subtle jammy note, followed by a slightly reductive hint. Tannins are delicate for Toro, even as the wine builds intensity and finishes on a lightly drying note. Flavorful and attractive, though slightly lacking in finesse—true to the region’s bold, intense style.

Bodegas Vetus situated in the beautiful Toro area is characterized by a strive for excellent groundbreaking quality in its wine. Using state-of-the-art technologies and working with excellent grape qualities, this bodega reflects the essence of the Toro wine. Naturally, the best French woods are used to impose the wine. Due to a double manual selection of the grapes both in the vineyard and on the selection table, only the best grapes are eligible for vinification.
Since its founding in 2003, Bodegas Vetus has been committed to preserving the all-essential regional character of the Toro, while at the same time adding the winery new concepts. In 2003, the Antón family (the face of Grupo Artevino) expanded to the Toro region, well aware of the region's future potential. After selecting several vineyards, they made the first vintage from Vetus, a wine designed to fully preserve the essence of the region, but also complement it with new nuances and goals. Encouraged by the success of the wine, an estate was set up in the heart of the region and a bodega was built which opened in 2008. The bodega's design is modern and balanced and consists of 3 buildings, each in harmony with the others. Each building houses a different wine production process.
Bodegas Vetus is built on a ridge and overlooks the beautiful estate. The vineyards are planted with Tinta de Toro and are close to the town of Toro, in the heart of the region.
