Aalto Winery
Founded in the late 1990s, Aalto quickly became one of Ribera del Duero's benchmarks. The estate uses old Tempranillo vines from select plots across the appellation. The style is contemporary yet serious, emphasizing ripe fruit, balance, and careful wood integration. Aalto combines concentration with accessibility, without losing sight of its aging potential.

Region, climate and location
Ribera del Duero is characterized by high-altitude vineyards and large temperature variations between day and night. These conditions ensure aromatic intensity and maintain freshness, even in riper years. The soils vary from chalky to clay and gravel, which contributes to the structure and tension of the wines.
Vineyards
Aalto works with a selection of old vineyards spread across several villages in Ribera del Duero. The vines produce low yields with concentrated fruit. By vinifying individual plots, he can select specifically for balance, ripeness, and regional expression.
Grape varieties and composition
The wine is made from Tempranillo, also known locally as Tinto Fino. The focus is on pure fruit and structure, without the use of other grape varieties. This creates a clear and recognizable style that closely reflects its origins.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. Vinification focuses on extraction and texture, ensuring a balance of power and finesse. Maturation takes place in oak barrels of various origins and ages. The wood supports the fruit and contributes to its complexity without becoming dominant.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep ruby red color. The aroma reveals ripe cherries and dark berry fruit, supported by notes of cedarwood, balsamic spices, and a subtle floral nuance. Accents of caramel and a light earthiness add depth. On the palate, the wine is broad and creamy in structure, with a clear yet well-integrated oak influence. The tannins are ripe and moderate, allowing the fruit to shine through. The overall result is balanced and polished, with a long, polished finish that combines modernity and freshness.

Parker
The eponymous red 2023 Aalto has an intoxicating nose of expensive oak, toast, smoke and spices over a core of ripe berry fruit. It has a little less ripeness than in previous years, coming in at 14.5% alcohol and keeping a pH of 3.58 and 5.43 grams of acidity. It's powerful and concentrated, with very fine tannins and very good balance. It should develop nicely in bottle. It's an old-vine Tempranillo cuvée matured in French and American oak barrels for 17 months. 330,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025.
Aalto is one of the biggest success stories and one of the prototypes of modern Ribera del Duero wines under the expert guidance of winemaker Mariano García. They control 130 hectares of vineyards throughout the region to produce 380,000 bottles of ripe, powerful and generously oaked wines that are very popular in some markets and segments. Drink Date: 2027 - 2034

Bodegas Aalto Ribera del Duero 2023
Dark and expressive, with preserved cherries, plums and a slightly pruny character. Full-bodied and generous, with ample fruit and round, plush tannins. Drink or hold.

Aalto was founded in 1999 by Mariano Garcia and Javier Zaccagnini. Mariano Garcia, can look back on a thirty-year career at the famous Vega Sicilia, and is generally regarded as Spain's number 1 winemaker. Thanks to him, Vega Sicilia has acquired name and fame.
More information about Aalto
Javier Zaccagnini was president of the 'Consejo Regulador' in Ribera del Duero for 6 years. As a result, both have good contacts and ties of friendship with the prominent owners of sufficient, unique vineyards in the best villages of the Ribera del Duero appellation. These owners are today suppliers of the finest Tinto Fino for Aalto and Aalto PS. Both gentlemen are true perfectionists, nothing is left to fate. Bodegas Aalto has approximately 42 hectares of vineyards, of which 32 hectares are planted with blue grape varieties.
The grapes undergo a selection test at the Table de tri. At the slightest irregularity, the bunch of grapes are completely discarded. Afterwards, everything runs according to gravity, so that abrupt actions of the wine pumps disappear, Mariano and Javier want to design plans for the winery themselves. After a 30-month supply in exclusively French oak, the selection is made between Aalto and Aalto PS. Their objective is to vinify a wine that reaches the highest quality status within 20 years.
