Description
In 2001 Sandra Tavares da Silva (Quinta do Vale D. Maria and Quinta de Chocapalha) and her husband Jorge Borges (then Niepoort, now Passadouro) started to realize their dream. They bought a vineyard of very old vines of 2 hectares in Vale de Mendiz next to Noval. The annual harvest is 4000 bottles and 100 Magnums. From the first harvest they have become one of the icons of the Douro and are nationally and internationally acclaimed for the charm and character of their wines that represent the unique terroir of the Douro region.
The Wine & Soul Pintas is a blend of old vines (84 years) from the Pinhão Valley and is a blend of more than 30 grape varieties from the Douro. The Pintas has matured for 20 months in French oak (30% new and 70% second-year wood). The wine starts a bit strict, but this is actually just a baby and through oxygen and decanting its true nature slowly emerges and that is power wrapped in an elegant coat. In the nose intense black fruit, cassis, earthy, complex. The wine has a fine concentration, focus and precision. The texture is pure velvet. In the mouth black fruit, muscular, mineral, notes of pure chocolate and mocha with a long warm finish with supple tannins. This elegant tyrant cries out for red meat and game dishes with powerful sauces, hard cheeses

The 2021 Pintas has an impressive nose—open, extroverted, aromatic and floral, a little toasty and smoky. This is always produced from the same vineyard at 400 to 450 meters above sea level on schist soils. It's spicy and has some creaminess, but it feels balanced and has freshness and acidity to absorb the oak with more time in bottle. It matured in 225-liter barrels, 20% of them new, for 20 months. This vineyard is very consistent; the old vines have deep roots, and the high altitude contributes to the freshness—and the 2021 vintage also helps! 6,000 bottles produced.
Wine & Soul, Jorge Serôdio and Sandra Tavares, have concentrated their efforts in the last years in the vineyards. They have grown from the initial two hectares for Pintas to over 40 hectares today. The portfolio has also grown, and so have volumes. They now produce 180,000 bottles, including Port.

Black cherries, black currants, licorice and roasted herbs on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, creamy and polished, with fine-grained tannins and a delicious finish. Drink or hold.
