Brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi are the children of renowned winemaker Tim Mondavi and the grandchildren of Robert Mondavi. Winemaking is in their genes, and their love of wine is passed down through generations. Carlo and Dante founded RAEN Winery in 2015 with the goal of producing a world-class Pinot Noir in the western foothills of California's Sonoma Coast. Currently, RAEN produces three Pinot Noirs from three unique locations on the Sonoma Coast.
The Bodega vineyard is our coolest, most exotic location, nestled directly behind Bodega Bay between the villages of Freestone and Occidental and within miles of the Pacific Ocean. Lower down, Bodega is bathed in refreshing morning mist and a constant coastal breeze. This 4.5-acre site is the oldest Pinot Noir planting on the Sonoma Coast. Due to its high density and steep terrain, this site is 100% hand-worked.
The 2022 Pinot Noir Freestone-Occidental is incredibly expressive and detailed! The aromas slowly unfold from blueberry, rhubarb, and cranberry to notes of bitter orange, amaro, mossy bark, and lavender, revealing new accents with each return to the glass. On the palate, a core of black fruit intertwines with exotic spices, orange pith, and notes of the surrounding forest where the vines grew. Flavors of dark berries, forest floor, and crushed gravel give way to a beautiful, lingering finish that beckons you for another sip of this fantastic Pinot Noir.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Freestone-Occidental is incredibly expressive and detailed! Its aromas open slowly from blueberry, rhubarb and cranberry to tones of bitter orange, amaro, mossy bark and lavender, continuing to reveal new accents with each return to the glass. Light-bodied, it floods the mouth with fragrant, detailed fruit supported by chalky tannins and focused, shimmery acidity that calls you in for another sip. It has a haunting finish loaded with spicy layers, and it's very difficult to put this delicious wine down. Drink it now for its transparency and perfume, or allow it to develop savory complexity in bottle over the next decade.
In 2020, Occidental bottled all five of their single-vineyard wines. In this marginal climate, harvest is significantly earlier than in warmer areas of Sonoma County. “Our first day of harvest was scheduled for the first day of the fires on August 18,” proprietor Steve Kistler remembered. “The summer was so warm and dry anyway, and the berries so small, we were already getting ready to pick. Our yields are under two tons per acre, and we pick so much earlier than most. For the next couple of weeks, we picked everything from both our properties. Everyone was at the mercy of the wind patterns, whether or not the smoke stagnated, how high the smoke was, etc. And if the fruit wasn’t ripe enough or if you had to wait to pick, it wouldn’t have worked. Our saving grace was that we had reached the edge of ripeness, and the wind patterns were in our favor. We didn’t change a single thing in the winery—it was either going to work or not. They were going to be Occidental wines or nothing at all.”

As winemakers and farmers, Carlo and Dante attribute much of what they learned to their grandfather Robert and father Tim, both of whom influenced them from an early age. Dante studied in Switzerland at Webster University in Geneva and at UC Davis in California. Carlo studied at the University of Aix-en-Provence in France and at the University of Milan in Italy. After their formal studies were completed, Carlo and Dante continued their educational work with the wine production team led by their father Tim Mondavi at Robert Mondavi Winery and Opus One. When Robert Mondavi Winery was sold in 2004, the brothers joined their father Tim, Aunt Marcia, and Grandfather Robert when they founded Continuum in 2005.
In 2013, Carlo and Dante founded the Raen winery with the aim of producing world-class Pinot Noir on the western hills of the Sonoma coast. Raen is currently focusing on creating 3 Pinot Noirs, from 3 unique locations on the Sonoma Coast namely: Fort Ross Seaview, Freestone Occidental and the eponymous Sonoma Coast. Raen Winery is located on the cool and rugged western hills of California's Sonoma Coast.
