History and background of Pazo Barrantes

The origins of Pazo de Barrantes date back to the early 16th century and have been linked to the Cebrián-Sagarriga family ever since—yes, the same family as the Marqués de Murrieta. At Pazo de Barrantes, they have embraced a new challenge as a tribute to one of the world's most extraordinary grape varieties, Albariño.

Pazo Barrantes' vineyards cover twelve hectares, spread across eight plots surrounding the winery. These plots have granite-rich soil with a sandy topsoil, which ensures optimal drainage and fresh, mineral notes in the wines. The average age of the vines is forty years, resulting in grapes with excellent concentration and complexity.

The winery and the Rías Baixas region

The Rías Baixas is the most prestigious Albariño appellation in Galicia. Thanks to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, a cool and humid climate prevails here, resulting in longer aging and vibrant acidity. The Valle del Salnés is the birthplace of the Albariño grape and is often considered the subregion where the grape expresses itself most purely. Its proximity to the ocean, granite soils, and constant humidity combine to create a terroir that produces fresh and aromatic white wines.

The 2022 Pazo Barrantes Gran Vino Albariño

The 2022 vintage of Gran Vino Albariño is the result of a warm and dry growing season in which the grapes achieved excellent health. Harvesting took place from September 9th to 19th and was carried out entirely by hand in small 20-kilo crates to ensure the grapes reached the cellar in optimal condition.

After rigorous selection, the grapes were destemmed and gently pressed in a pneumatic press. The must was purified by flotation, which guarantees a clear aromatic expression. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of around 10°C and lasted 43 days. After fermentation, the wine remained on the fine lees for four months to develop structure and complexity.

Maturation and bottle rest

For further aging, 85 percent of the wine was aged in stainless steel and 15 percent in 225-liter acacia barrels for eight months. Acacia wood imparts subtle floral and spicy notes without overpowering the fruit. After this period, the wine rested for another two years in the bottle before release. A total of 127,820 bottles and 1,956 magnums were produced, underscoring the exclusivity of this cuvée.

Tasting notes of the wine

The Gran Vino Albariño 2022 displays a bright, light yellow color with greenish nuances. The nose reveals aromas of nectarine and yellow plum, complemented by acacia blossom, fennel, and a subtle balsamic note. The aroma is expressive yet refined.

On the palate, the wine is lively and energetic, with a juicy attack and a broad mid-palate. The fresh acidity contributes to the tension and ensures a long, persistent finish with a slight salty note. Tasting it alongside older vintages reveals that this wine is still young, but will develop further with age, revealing additional complexity, such as notes of licorice and ripe fruit.

International wine critics describe this vintage as refined, with a perfect balance between ripeness and freshness, and particularly praise the wine's length and depth.

Pazo de Barrantes is located in the Salnés Valley (Pontevedra), where there are perfect conditions for the growth of Albariño grapes. This impressive Pazo (Galician country house) has been owned by the family of the Count of Creixell since 1511 and rises from the vineyards Pazo de Barrantes is located in the heart of the Rías Baixas and has 30 hectares surrounding historic Pazo. Pazo Barrantes is without doubt one of the flagship wines of the Rías Baixas DO. The Albariño grape grows in the Pazo de Barrantes' vineyard with the famous sea injection. This vineyard provides a lot of aromatic complexity to the wine, thanks to the natural influences on the landscape. The Pazo de Barrantes is the perfect 'sister winery' of Marqués de Murrieta. They complement each other perfectly, Marques is among the top of the Rioja and Pazo de Barrantes the top among the Albarinos. Both the Barrantes Albariño and the scarce La Comtesse are among the absolute top of the Spanish Albariños
