Description
Stock Ranch Vineyard Chardonnay, a wine that comes from a site two mountain ranges from the coast in western Sonoma County. Situated on the southern reaches of the coastline that face the Mayacamas to the east and the winds and fogs of the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is a betwixt and between site, influenced by both the rising heat of the Santa Rosa Plain and the cooling of the ocean. The wine is characterized by a distinct sense of salinity and penetrating, precise fruit notes with a deep sense of concentration and extract, supported by strong natural acidity.
Kistler Vineyards is a small family owned winery in the Russian River Valley. They specialize in producing Burgundy style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The winery was founded in 1978 by the Kistler family. They own some of the best vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Dutton Ranch (Russian River Valley) in Western Sonoma County. The winery was founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler. Kistler Vineyards has built a reputation for its dedication to making wines that express the unique terroir of the various vineyards they source from.
Kistler is best known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs, which consistently receive high ratings and critical acclaim. The winery produces a range of single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, often named after the vineyard from which the grapes originate. Some of the notable vineyards that Kistler works with include Dutton Ranch, Hudson Vineyard, and Cuvee Cathleen. Kistler follows a minimal intervention philosophy of winemaking, with the goal of allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and vineyard to shine through in the wines. They use traditional winemaking techniques and often ferment their wines with indigenous yeasts. Kistler wines are produced in relatively small quantities, making them highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts. The limited production adds to their exclusivity. In recent years, the winery has adopted biodynamic farming practices in some of its vineyards. This holistic approach to farming is aimed at improving the health and vitality of the vineyards and grapes.

The Stock Ranch Chardonnay is a brand-new wine from a site Kistler first planted in 2016. Located on a ridge at 800 feet above the Bohemian Highway just north of the town of Occidental, it's influenced by both heat from Sonoma Valley and fog and coastal breezes from the Pacific Ocean. Since the beginning, this new site "had a pretty distinct personality," says winemaker Jason Kesner. Now, "The vines are mature, and it continues to raise its hand and ask to be noticed in the cellar." The 2022 Chardonnay Stock Ranch is detailed, dynamic and expressive. It opens with pure scents of saline and seashell, grapefruit and tangerine oil, white pepper and spice. The palate is arresting with its pure, ripe citrus and honey-nut layers and luxuriously silky texture. It's lent energy and a shimmery feel by a taut spine of acidity and finishes with tremendous length. 500 cases were bottled.

From: 2022 Sonoma: A First Look (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Chardonnay Stock Ranch is a new wine from Kistler. It emerges from a site near Occidental, on the border with the West Sonoma Coast. Deep, bold and luscious, the 2022 stands out from the rest of the wines in this range because of its textural depth and overall intensity. At the same time, the Stock Ranch has plenty of energy and overall structure. It's one of my favorites In the range.

This is a superb set of new releases from Kistler. Readers will find wines that express the essence of site, which, in my view, is always the most important attribute for vineyard-designate wines.
Longtime winemaker Jason Kesner describes the 2022 growing season as having had more rain than the year prior. Warm weather in the early part of the year led to an early bud break. The rest of the growing season was rather mild. Harvest began in mid-August, as was the case at many properties. Longtime Kistler fans should take note of the new Chardonnay Stock Ranch, which is terrific in its debut vintage. This year I also tasted the appellation bottlings, wines that are mostly directed at restaurants.
