Description
This Laguna Ridge Russian River Valley Pinot Noir from Kistler is sourced from layers of sandstone, granular sediments and petrified wood fragments. This mountaintop vineyard looks out to the coast in one direction and the Russian River Valley in the other. Situated on layers of sandstone, granular sediments and petrified wood fragments, Laguna Ridge has been the source of Laguna Ridge (formerly labeled Kistler Vineyard) Pinot Noir since 2006. Produces a Pinot Noir with balanced concentration, impressive, precise energy in the deep red and blueberry fruity core, subtle mineral undertones and lifted delicate varietal aromas.
Kistler Vineyards is a small family owned winery in the Russian River Valley. They specialize in producing Burgundy style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The winery was founded in 1978 by the Kistler family. They own some of the best vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Dutton Ranch (Russian River Valley) in Western Sonoma County. The winery was founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler. Kistler Vineyards has built a reputation for its dedication to making wines that express the unique terroir of the various vineyards they source from.
Kistler is best known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs, which consistently receive high ratings and critical acclaim. The winery produces a range of single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, often named after the vineyard from which the grapes originate. Some of the notable vineyards that Kistler works with include Dutton Ranch, Hudson Vineyard, and Cuvee Cathleen. Kistler follows a minimal intervention philosophy of winemaking, with the goal of allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and vineyard to shine through in the wines. They use traditional winemaking techniques and often ferment their wines with indigenous yeasts. Kistler wines are produced in relatively small quantities, making them highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts. The limited production adds to their exclusivity. In recent years, the winery has adopted biodynamic farming practices in some of its vineyards. This holistic approach to farming is aimed at improving the health and vitality of the vineyards and grapes.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Laguna Ridge Vineyard is pure and complex. Blueberry and pomegranate are layered with accents of bitters, mushroom powder and bergamot. The medium-bodied palate is silky, seamless and mouthwatering and offers surprisingly detailed, concentrated flavors for its modest weight.

From: 2022 Sonoma: A First Look (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Pinot Noir Laguna Ridge is dark, pliant and super-expressive right out of the gate. At the same time, it is also quite closed structurally, which I take as a positive sign for its future development. Black cherry, lavender, sage, mint and dried flowers build beautifully in the glass. There's gorgeous textural depth and intensity here.

This is a superb set of new releases from Kistler. Readers will find wines that express the essence of site, which, in my view, is always the most important attribute for vineyard-designate wines.
Longtime winemaker Jason Kesner describes the 2022 growing season as having had more rain than the year prior. Warm weather in the early part of the year led to an early bud break. The rest of the growing season was rather mild. Harvest began in mid-August, as was the case at many properties. Longtime Kistler fans should take note of the new Chardonnay Stock Ranch, which is terrific in its debut vintage. This year I also tasted the appellation bottlings, wines that are mostly directed at restaurants.
