Description
Kistler Vineyards is a small family owned winery in the Russian River Valley. They specialize in producing Burgundy style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The winery was founded in 1978 by the Kistler family. They own some of the best vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Dutton Ranch (Russian River Valley) in Western Sonoma County. The winery was founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler. Kistler Vineyards has built a reputation for its dedication to making wines that express the unique terroir of the various vineyards they source from.
Kistler is best known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs, which consistently receive high ratings and critical acclaim. The winery produces a range of single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, often named after the vineyard from which the grapes originate. Some of the notable vineyards that Kistler works with include Dutton Ranch, Hudson Vineyard, and Cuvee Cathleen. Kistler follows a minimal intervention philosophy of winemaking, with the goal of allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and vineyard to shine through in the wines. They use traditional winemaking techniques and often ferment their wines with indigenous yeasts. Kistler wines are produced in relatively small quantities, making them highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts. The limited production adds to their exclusivity. In recent years, the winery has adopted biodynamic farming practices in some of its vineyards. This holistic approach to farming is aimed at improving the health and vitality of the vineyards and grapes.
The Dutton Ranch vineyard features sand-driven Gold Ridge soils. Situated in the heart of where the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations intersect and planted in the sand-driven Gold Ridge soil series. A Chardonnay of precision, with focused, structural acidity woven into a body of delicate orchard fruit notes, topped by soil-driven aromas.

The 2022 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch is a dynamic wine that unfolds over hours and then days. In the beginning, the nose is dominated by citrus and saline, but with time it reveals apricot, citrus blossoms, green pineapple and exotic undertones. The medium-bodied palate pairs concentration and freshness. Its ripe, satiny, mouth-coating flavors are enlivened by bright acidity, and its long, flavorful, juicy finish calls you back for another taste.

From: 2022 Sonoma: A First Look (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch comes across as a bit tight in this tasting. Bright citrus peel, crushed rocks, minerals and salt notes lend a quite appealing freshness and vibrancy. At the same time, the 2022 has a lot to offer, for those who can wait. Today, though, it feels just a bit slender.

This is a superb set of new releases from Kistler. Readers will find wines that express the essence of site, which, in my view, is always the most important attribute for vineyard-designate wines.
Longtime winemaker Jason Kesner describes the 2022 growing season as having had more rain than the year prior. Warm weather in the early part of the year led to an early bud break. The rest of the growing season was rather mild. Harvest began in mid-August, as was the case at many properties. Longtime Kistler fans should take note of the new Chardonnay Stock Ranch, which is terrific in its debut vintage. This year I also tasted the appellation bottlings, wines that are mostly directed at restaurants.
