Description
Kistler Vineyards is a small family owned winery in the Russian River Valley. They specialize in producing Burgundy style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The winery was founded in 1978 by the Kistler family. They own some of the best vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Dutton Ranch (Russian River Valley) in Western Sonoma County. The winery was founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler. Kistler Vineyards has built a reputation for its dedication to making wines that express the unique terroir of the various vineyards they source from.
Kistler is best known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs, which consistently receive high ratings and critical acclaim. The winery produces a range of single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, often named after the vineyard from which the grapes originate. Some of the notable vineyards that Kistler works with include Dutton Ranch, Hudson Vineyard, and Cuvee Cathleen. Kistler follows a minimal intervention philosophy of winemaking, with the goal of allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and vineyard to shine through in the wines. They use traditional winemaking techniques and often ferment their wines with indigenous yeasts. Kistler wines are produced in relatively small quantities, making them highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts. The limited production adds to their exclusivity. In recent years, the winery has adopted biodynamic farming practices in some of its vineyards. This holistic approach to farming is aimed at improving the health and vitality of the vineyards and grapes.
The Durell vineyard has a marine loam soil, strongly influenced by a stony vein. Located in the southern part of the Sonoma Valley, where it meets the Sonoma Coast and Carneros appellations. The part of the vineyard is a marine loam, strongly influenced by a stony vein that cuts through our blocks. Produces a Chardonnay with delicious weighted base notes, hints of sun-drenched orchard fruit and a sublime rich nature that is consistently laced and supported by an energetic acidic core.

The 2022 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard is delicate and tinkly. At this early stage, it sits low in the glass, focused on flint, iodine and candle smoke rather than its youthful lemon, pear and citrus blossom aromas. The light-bodied palate balances a gently creamy texture with bright, mouthwatering acidity. It features pure, saline-tinged flavors and has a long, perfumed finish.

From: 2022 Sonoma: A First Look (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard is ample and creamy in the glass, with striking nuance. A vivid and expressive wine, the Durrell marries brightness with textural resonance. Citrus confit, white flowers, spice, tangerine peel and mint fill out the layers. There's a lot to like.

This is a superb set of new releases from Kistler. Readers will find wines that express the essence of site, which, in my view, is always the most important attribute for vineyard-designate wines.
Longtime winemaker Jason Kesner describes the 2022 growing season as having had more rain than the year prior. Warm weather in the early part of the year led to an early bud break. The rest of the growing season was rather mild. Harvest began in mid-August, as was the case at many properties. Longtime Kistler fans should take note of the new Chardonnay Stock Ranch, which is terrific in its debut vintage. This year I also tasted the appellation bottlings, wines that are mostly directed at restaurants.
