2022 Hamilton Russell Vineyards Pinot Noir Magnum

Hamilton Russell is situated in the Hemel en Aarde Valley at the southernmost tip of South Africa. It enjoys a cool, maritime climate. The company produces terroir-driven wines there, which rank among the absolute top of South African wines. The specialization lies in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It is one of the southernmost and closest-to-the-sea wine estates in South Africa. Founder Tim Hamilton Russell purchased the undeveloped 170-hectare estate in 1975. The estate specializes in producing terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the best in the New World.

The poor, stony, clayey soil, the cool maritime mesoclimate, the naturally low yields of well under 35 hl/ha, and the philosophy of expressing the terroir in the wines—ensure a certain tightness, tannin line, and increased length, and balance the richness and generosity of our Pinot Noir. This Pinot Noir is not overly fruity, soft, and 'sweet', and generally displays hints of that seductive savory 'primitive' character, along with a dark, spicy, complex primary fruit perfume.

The Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir opens beautifully with complex aromas of salted licorice, black pepper, and wet clay on the nose, combined with subtle aromas of wild strawberries and herbs. Softly fruity with a seductive 'primitive character'. Dark, spicy, complex aroma. Characteristic of this wine is the amount of fine tannins. A very elegant and crisp Pinot Noir.
