Description
Every year, the best plot of the vineyard from which Emilio Moro is made is selected by the Moro family and used for the scarce Vendimia Seleccionada (Select Harvest).
The grapes come from the Turquilla vineyard, which has a clayey soil and is located 900 m above sea level. Fermented at controlled temperature and aged in American and French oak barrels (50-50) for 12 months, combining the use of new and second year oak. There are around 10,000 bottles of Emilio Moro Vendimia Seleccionada world wine available and they are allocated to a limited number of importers (including Grandcru wines). That is why you will not see this wine very often and we also only receive a handful of this wine.
The Vendimia Seleccionada shows the Emilio Moro house style and the pure taste of Tempranillo on high ground. The wine has good ripeness and concentration, oak and grainy tannins present and shows remarkable freshness. Beautiful ruby red, with red and dark fruit and a bit of leather, cedar and espresso and a bit of plum, full but also fresh in the mouth.

Issue 246 End of December 2019, The Wine Advocate
The Vendimia Seleccionada is produced with the best plot of the vineyards they use for the Emilio Moro range in a given year, and for the second year in a row, it was the vineyard they call Turquilla, as the 2017 Vendimia Seleccionada that I tasted next to the 2016 was also produced with grapes from that vineyard. 2017 is a very challenging year, as 50% of the crop was lost to frost. They have done a very good job for the conditions of the year, but having the 2016 next to it shows the superiority of the older vintage, as this does not reach the same quality levels; there is less complexity and depth. It has fine, grainy tannins and a supple, dry finish and it opens up quite nicely in the glass. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019.
Against all odds, the 2017s from Emilio Moro showed quite well, despite the superiority of 2016 in complexity and depth. The top range for sale now is from the 2015 vintage, and the wines behaved quite well for a warm and dry year. They are some of the icons of modern Ribera del Duero, and following the line of the previous years, the oak feels better and better integrated, of course within their powerful and generously oaked style.

Ribera del Duero Vendemia Seleccionada 2020 | $48
Fresh and balanced, with a hint of iron underscoring flavors of crushed blackberry, dried thyme and lavender, white pepper and rose hip. Subtle finish, with light, fine tannins. This isn't a powerhouse, but very drinkable. Drink now through 2026. 2,000 cases made, 800 cases imported.

The 2021 Vendimia Seleccionada comes from Pesquera del Duero and spent up to 12 months in French oak barrels. Garnet-red in color. The nose offers cherry and blackberry notes and a pencil box hint. Dry and plush, the fairly structured tannins and mildly indulgent mouthfeel make for a substantial palate before the lingering, fruity finish.

Founded by Emilio Moro and continued by his grandsons, José and Javier Moro, this Pesquera de Duero winery boasts 300 hectares of vineyards, mostly in the local area, with some elsewhere in Ribera. They produce their own Tempranillo clone and use it in nearly all their output. The wines are done in a refreshing and modern Ribera style, characterized by vibrant fruit, polished tannins and a touch of New World flair. Their renowned Malleolus label has been bottled since 2000. The family also owns a winery in Bierzo, where they craft Godellos with a contemporary twist.

The family business Emilio Moro has been located in Pesquera del Duero since 1892. This bodega boasts a three-generation tradition and includes vineyards over 90 years old. Due to their long history, they have been able to expand their vineyards very specifically with mostly Tinto Fino. The Finca Resalso and Crianza excel in purity, elegance and complexity. The top cuvées are of rare class; the very old vines of these two 'Pagos' give an extremely low yield resulting in very complex wines with a great depth and temperament.
In 1987 Emilio Moro first launched his own wines under his own label. With about 200 hectares of vineyards and a total annual production of 1.5 million bottles, it is a modern and large company. Thanks to its high quality standards and innovative management, it is also one of the leading wine companies. This applies not only in Spain but money worldwide and this is also confirmed that it has been nominated by Wine Enthusiast as Best Winery of the World. Emilio Moro's focus on Research, Development and Innovation is impressive and the enormous focus on quality is certainly an important factor in the high quality of all wines, but let's not forget that the old Emilio Moro vineyards are located in the most beautiful part of the Ribera del Duero with a completely unique and extremely suitable terroir located at a great height. In 2017, Wine Spectator placed the Emilio Moro in 59th place in the Prestigious Top 100 of the world's best wines.
In 2008, Emilio Moro died at the age of 75. In the same year, the Emilio Moro foundation was established, which is committed to providing poor regions of the world with clean drinking water and improving living conditions. Javier & José Moro are now in charge.
The emilio moro portfolio consists of 5 red wines, all of which are made from the regional variant of the Tempranillo (tinto fino). The special thing is that a very old pure clone is used. The vineyards range from 30-90 years old, but even the younger vineyards are from the lots of this unique clone. Emilio moro does not use the terms Crianza or Reserva and the name of the wine stands for the character of the wine.
