The Philippe Colin estate and its background

Domaine Philippe Colin is one of the modern, high-quality producers of Chassagne-Montrachet. The estate was founded in 2004 when Philippe, descended from a renowned winemaking family, forged his own path in Burgundy. His style is characterized by precision, clarity, and a clear focus on terroir. The estate works primarily in Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, where some of the world's most sought-after white wines are produced.

Emmanuel Lanier-Garde is currently in charge of vinification, as Philippe spends much of his time in South Africa working on his Topiary project. This collaboration ensures a clear, consistent style and an even more precise approach to vinification. The combination of Burgundian tradition and a modern, technical approach results in wines with finesse, tension, and a clear expression of origin.

FYI: Philippe is Marc Colin's brother. Read more about the Colin family here.

The terroir of Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Chevalier-Montrachet is one of the most prestigious Grand Crus of the Côte de Beaune and lies directly above Montrachet. The vineyard is known for its chalky, stony soil, which produces wines of enormous finesse, length, and mineral tension. The microclimate on this slope allows for slow and even ripening, which is essential for the development of aromatic precision and structure.

The 2022 vintage was harvested starting on August 26th, an early harvest period consistent with the warm summers of recent years. Despite the heat, the estate reports that the wines remained surprisingly balanced and fresh. Yields were around 45 to 55 hectoliters per hectare, which is considered good for Grand Cru quality and supports the balance between concentration and elegance.

The Chardonnay grape in this Grand Cru

Chevalier-Montrachet is entirely planted with Chardonnay. This grape achieves a unique expression here thanks to the combination of altitude, soil, and microclimate. Chardonnay from Chevalier-Montrachet is known for its pure minerality, tight structure, and layered aromatics. The 2022 vintage showcases this typical style with a restrained yet tense character.

While some parcels tend toward fuller aromas in warmer years, Chevalier-Montrachet almost always retains a core of precision and freshness. This is thanks to the chalky soil, which provides drainage and coolness, allowing the grapes to build aromatic intensity without becoming overly heavy.

Vinification and maturation of the 2022

The Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 was vinified in line with the estate's new approach. The use of 500-liter barrels during aging creates subtle wood influences. Only three barrels were produced this vintage, one of which was new. This limited production contributes to the wine's concentration and carefully constructed structure.

The estate's wines are bottled early in the year, with most cuvées expected to be bottled in early 2024. The 2022 harvest produced wines that the technical team considers balanced. Despite a warm summer, the acidity was retained. The wine is recommended to rest for several years to reveal its full complexity. A drinking window until at least 2042 indicates that the vintage has sufficient tension for long-term aging.

Color, aroma and taste of Chevalier-Montrachet 2022

The Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 has a refined, understated aroma. The nose is remarkably tight and mineral, less expressive than some warmer vintages. This suits the winery's style and the character of this vineyard. Subtle floral and citrus notes are present on the nose, supported by a light spice and a hint of oak.

On the palate, the wine immediately reveals greater depth. The structure is full and rich, but never heavy. The balance between ripe fruit and lively acidity is well-crafted. The wine has tension and clearly defined layers, with a texture that displays both power and finesse. The finish is clean and precise, although it is recommended to rest the wine in the bottle for several years to fully develop. With its pure style and long maturation, this is a wine that rewards the connoisseur with patience.
