Description
Actually, we don't need to tell much about the iconic winemaker Rene Barbier. His Clos Mogador is perhaps the most famous Priorat wine. It is an organically grown full-bodied deep red wine and belongs to the absolute top of the Priorat. The Clos Mogador is full of black ripe fruit, herbs, minerals, coffee, truffles, beautiful tannins and a very impressive aftertaste. The Clos Mogador is a blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are picked over a period of two months, because they do not all ripen at the same time. The grapes are grown biodynamically, so with attention and respect for the plant and the natural conditions, and all work on the land is carried out by hand.
The grapes come from vineyards coming from slate terraces that give the wine that famous pure minerality that Priorat is famous for. The grapes coming from slate and biodynamic cultivation of Clos Mogador and the vinification techniques of the Barbiers are seen worldwide as the example of how to get a wine that so perfectly sums up a "terroir" with that subtle fusion of fruit and nature. The 2022 vintage is a blend of 45% garnatxa negra,
29% carinyena, 16% syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The dense, purple-black color of this vintage heralds an impressive bouquet that combines spiciness, smokiness and herbs with a nice touch of toast. In the mouth all these impressions are enhanced by multiple layers of coffee aromas, chocolate, liquorice and ripe, generous fruit. The silky, but persistent tannins are accompanied by a refreshing acidity . In our opinion a wine that should not be missing in a nice wine collection and compared to French or Italian top wines this is still relatively very cheap. In its young years definitely decant because this is a wine that is known to improve for many years and has a drinking window until 2035+ This is a magnum of 1.5 liters in an original wooden box (OWC/1). Even tastier and with a longer drinking window.
For the first time in Spain, Clos Mogador, one of the prestigious wines made by René Barbier in the DOCa. Priorat, is awarded the prestigious qualification «Vi de Finca» “Vi de Finca” is an additional qualification to the DOCa. Priorat certification, which already recognizes this wine. Clos Mogador was the first wine to receive this prestigious qualification in all of Spain. It certifies that all the grapes used to make this wine have come from the single vineyard of Clos Mogador for at least the last five years (five years that can be documented and traced), and at the same time is awarded to a wine that has enjoyed international fame for more than ten years.
FACT: The grapes are pressed using an olive oil press, which only produces half of the grape juice (in contrast to a regular press), but this is the most beautiful part and makes the wine 50% more concentrated. In the 'Attachments' tab you will find the official fact sheet of this beautiful wine. We will automatically send it to you when you order this wine. The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to collect the wine, you will often also receive a nice discount . You will see your discount immediately when you choose 'Collection' on the checkout page. We are located in Dordrecht with plenty of parking. Click here for our address.
René Barbier is, together with Carles Pastrana of Clos de l'Obac, Alvaro Palacios (from Rioja , but known for L'Ermita in Priorat) and José Lluis Perez (Clos Martinet, and father of Sarah Perez), one of the "founding fathers" of this recently discovered or rediscovered wine region Priorat. Clos Mogador is named after the single vineyard that René Barbier started cultivating in the 1970s, in the now world-famous village of Gratallops. The wines of Clos Mogador have become mythical wines, just like Sassicaia from Italy and Château Margaux from France. Clos Mogador has the cult status of a great world wine. A special feature in winemaking at René Barbier: he presses the grapes using an olive oil press, which means that only half of the grape juice is obtained (as opposed to a normal press). This makes the wine 50% more concentrated and it almost seems liqueur-like in the glass. Priorat wines are naturally quite concentrated, and yields are usually already microscopic. Robert Parker was one of the first international journalists to give Clos Mogador wines extra praise. and now the wines of Rene Barbier and Sara Perez (Rene's wife) are a household name.
In addition to the Clos Mogador, his wife, the famous winemaker Sara Pérez, makes wines in the Montsant (the region around the Priorat) from the winery La Universal and Mas Martinet. These wines such as Clos Martinet, Venus and Dido are now also among Spain's best wines.

Their single-vineyard 2022 Clos Mogador, they flagship wine, was produced with a blend of grapes, mostly Garnacha and Cariñena but also some Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon (less and less, as they are regrafting most of them). It fermented with 40% full clusters and matured in 2,000- and 2,500-liter oak foudres; some are old barriques, to avoid having too much new oak, and some lots finish aging in concrete to complete some 20 months. They have implemented some changes, moving toward larger volumes, abandoning the barriques and moving to foudre (with the low volumes in 2024, the wine will be only in foudre). It has a very Mediterranean nose with plenty of dry hay and straw notes, the classical wet slate notes, very Priorat too, and it has a round palate and very fine, chalky tannins. It's serious and harmonious and feels relaxed, without any excess. It comes in at 14% alcohol with 5.4 grams of acidity and a bone-dry finish. None of the 2022s showed excess heat or ripeness. The alcohol is contained and integrated, and the wines are balanced and harmonious but with a more Mediterranean profile. 35,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.
Clos Mogador is the winery from the Barbier family in Gratallops in Priorat, where they have 40 hectares of vineyards and produce 60,000 to 65,000 bottles of wine per year. In the last few years, they have had to be creative to be able to continue producing wines with energy and balance, given the challenging weather of recent years. They have started to use direct pressings, employ carbonic maceration of the grapes from south-facing plots or varieties more sensitive to drought, play with the blends to achieve more freshness and use less oxidative materials for the élevage.
This time, I tasted with Christian Barber, who has also started his own personal project (Christian Barber i Gisela, reviewed separately). He's in charge of the vineyards and explained the changes they've been implementing to adapt to the new climate conditions, such as using cover crops, harvesting earlier, working with more indigenous varieties, fermenting with some full clusters and some carbonic maceration, etc. He works in regenerative agriculture and has suffered a lot in the last couple of years because of the lack of rain. The vineyards are certified organic, and they also have a biodynamic certification from the Regenerative Viticulture Alliance, but for now, the bottles don't carry the seal. Yields have been abysmal for Clos Mogador in recent years: in 2023, they produced 50% of the normal volume, and in 2024, they produced half of what they produced in 2023! But the wines are as good as ever or even better!

The oak spices are still a bit prominent, but that doesn’t hinder its expression of complexity and impressive depth. Graphite, roasted spices and a panoply of dried herbs and sweet cherries. It is plump, almost full-bodied and layered, with firm, fine tannins and a lengthy finish. Drink from 2025.

From: From Revolution to Evolution: The Garnatxas and Cariñenas of Priorat & Montsant (Nov 2024)
The 2021 Clos Mogador comprises 45% Garnatxa, 29% Carinyena, 16% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with 30% whole clusters and aged for 18 months in foudres. Garnet in color, it features liqueur-like aromas of blackcurrant and plum, along with earthy notes and hints of iron and blood. Dry and compact, it flows with fine-grained tannins, a dusty texture and a juicy, flavorful mouthfeel. The finish is exceptionally long, with nuanced complexity. This is one of those rare wines that can shift one's perception of what’s possible in the Priorat region. Clos Mogador is one of the few wineries that put Priorat on the fine wine map in the early 1990s, and the 2021 vintage is yet another example that justifies that recognition.
- By Joaquín Hidalgo on November 2024
Founded by René Barbier in 1979, Clos Mogador is one of the five famous wineries that reinvented Priorat in the 1990s. René Barbier Jr. now runs the daily operations, overseeing both oenology and viticulture. Possessing an excellent understanding of the extreme conditions in Priorat, Barbier Jr. focuses on Garnatxa and Cariñena, aiming to bring out the purest possible expression of the region and working to revive long-suffering vineyards, such as Manyetas, Almendros and the stunning Espectacle. Barbier doesn’t like fruitiness, equating it to “the ketchup of wine, ” but he produces vivid expressions of the regional terroir, imbued with the subtle, painstakingly polished textures that are his true love. A far cry from the concentrated styles of yesteryear, these wines have the strange magic one finds in Priorat: weightless concentration, complex, ripe expressions, freshness and a free-flowing spirit. As Barbier Jr. says, “In Priorat, we make wines of character. If you want elegance, go to Burgundy.”

The Clos Mogador vineyard is located at an altitude of about 800 meters in the form of an amphitheater with stone terraces. Biodiversity is the magic word here: in addition to grape plants, you will find fruit trees, olive trees and local native shrubs here. The grape plants, some of which are eighty to one hundred years old, grow on a slate base. Slate is a poor and hard soil that has the main property of generating a high acidity in the grapes. The location of the vineyard on slopes in a northeasterly direction to the sea ensures that the nights are very chilly. Because the temperature in the summer in that place is usually thirty degrees Celsius during the day, this means that there are large temperature differences. This ensures that dyes and tannins accumulate in large quantities in the grape skins and that is a sign of quality. The grapes are grown biodynamically, so with attention and respect for the plant and natural conditions, and all work on the land is carried out by hand.
In La figuera (Montsant) his vineyards of René Barbier lie against a mountain slope at an altitude of 400 meters approximately. Beautiful Garnacha come from in this area. This is where the famous Espectacle wine comes from. Nice and ripe with enough acids due to its height. He only picks the grapes when everyone has already harvested, which makes them nice and ripe and full. And its vines are 120 years old with low yields. In Falset his bodega is located on a modern local industrial area Celler laurona.
Grand Cruwines is the co-importer of the wines of Rene Barbier, such as the Clos Mogador, the Espectacle, Manyetes and the Nelin Blanco.
