Description
History of Clos Les Lunelles and the Côtes de Castillon region
Clos Les Lunelles is a relatively young wine estate with a remarkable reputation, thanks in part to its owner Gérard Perse, who also owns the renowned Château Pavie in Saint-Émilion. Clos Les Lunelles is located in the Côtes de Castillon, immediately east of Saint-Émilion, and benefits from a similar terroir. The region has developed over the past decades into a serious producer of quality Bordeaux wines that are often compared to those of their prestigious neighbours.
Owners, vineyard and terroir
Gérard Perse is known for his high quality standards and careful vineyard management. Clos Les Lunelles comprises approximately 9.5 hectares of vineyards with vines averaging over 40 years old. The soils are mainly limestone with clay and sand – similar to those of the Saint-Émilion plateau. This terroir produces grapes with natural concentration, finesse and a clear minerality. Thanks to low yields per hectare and manual harvesting, maximum quality is guaranteed.
Climate and location
The estate is located in the eastern part of Bordeaux, in an area with a temperate maritime climate. Summers are warm, winters mild, and the proximity of the Dordogne river ensures good air circulation and night cooling. This allows the grapes to retain their freshness and aromatic tension. The chalky subsoil contributes to the structure and longevity of the wine.
Grapes, harvest and vinification of the 2022 vintage
The 2022 Clos Les Lunelles is a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Merlot thrives on the limestone soils, providing depth and roundness, while the Cabernets add structure and freshness. The harvest was entirely hand-picked, with strict selection of only the best bunches. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak, followed by maturation for approximately 18 months in barriques, half of which are new and the other half from the previous year.
Color, odor and flavor profile
This wine shows itself in the glass with a deep ruby red color and purple hues. In the nose we find intense aromas of ripe black cherries, blackberries, violets and a hint of graphite. Notes of cocoa, mocha and a subtle spiciness are also noticeable. In the mouth the wine is full, concentrated and powerful, with soft but present tannins. The texture is silky with a core of dark fruit and minerality. The wine has a long, precise aftertaste with refined wood tones, salmiak and earthy nuances.
Why choose the 2022 Clos Les Lunelles
The 2022 Clos Les Lunelles is a convincing Bordeaux that offers a lot for its origins. It exceeds the expectations of the Côtes de Castillon and can compete with renowned crus from Saint-Émilion. Thanks to the meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar, this wine is particularly expressive, long-lasting and very suitable for both enthusiasts and connoisseurs. The wine combines power with elegance and precision, and offers excellent value for money.
