Medoc region

Within Bordeaux, the red wines from Médoc are best regarded, and this is where the most expensive wines in the world come from. But, fortunately, there are also red wines that are of good quality and affordable. Big names are Mouton-Rotschild and Margaux, classic red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon. They may supplement the Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The Médoc is a French wine region in the Gironde department, above the city of Bordeaux. The region extends over an area of ​​80 by 15 kilometers along the left bank of the Gironde. It is divided into the Haut-Médoc in the south and the (Bas-)Médoc in the north. The vines, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot, are on terraces of pebble, gravel, limestone, clay, marl and sand, which ensures good drainage.

History

Before the 17th century, the Medoc region consisted only of fields for rye production. Dutch engineers drained the lands of medoc for agricultural use. After a certain time, the Medoc region became suitable for wine production and vineyards were planted in 1760.

In the 19th century, the left half of Bordeaux was completely full of vineyards that fell under the Medoc appellation. Many vineyards and chateaux were opened during this period. Nowadays, wine tastings in the region are super popular.

History of Bordeaux

The Romans were among the first to cultivate vineyards in the Bordeaux region, beginning around the 1st century AD. They recognized the potential of the region's fertile soil and favorable climate for wine production. The city of Burdigala (modern Bordeaux) became an important center for the wine trade. The wine trade in Bordeaux continued to flourish during the Middle Ages. Pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela in Spain helped spread Bordeaux's reputation. The Hundred Years' War between England and France further strengthened the region's ties with England. The 1259 Treaty of Paris marked the end of the English occupation of Bordeaux. Bordeaux wines continued to gain international recognition and were highly regarded among European nobility. The Dutch in particular were important importers of Bordeaux wines. The official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 is a milestone in the history of Bordeaux. Wine production of Bordeaux

Older, used barrels release less or no more aromas and tannins, but they still have an oxidative function. New wood barrels let in dosed oxygen and ensure that the wine has aromas and tannins. This is more intense with smaller barrels than with large wooden barrels.

The Cabernet Sauvignon grape

What does a Cabernet Sauvignon wine taste like?

What temperature should you drink Cabernet Sauvignon?

Over the occasion, a red wine should be drunk at a temperature slightly cooler than room temperature. A Cabernet Sauvignon's ideal serving temperature is 16°C, but the aromas of the wine will come out well between 15 and 18°C.

What does the Petit Verdot taste like?

Petit Verdot produces powerful wines with notes of ripe, black fruit (blueberries, black cherries, blue plums), smoke, spices, cedar and molassses. Furthermore, the wines have firm tannins and a long finish. Excellent combination with game, tournedos, lamb, steak, seasoned pork and hard cheeses.
