Description
La Dame de Montrose, made to the same exacting standards as the Ferieste wine, from grapes grown in the same vineyard, is the estate's second label. The supple and silky Merlot generally predominates in the varietal blend. The very pronounced aromas and flavors of red fruit reflect another expression of the terroir in a distinctive style. Consistently reliable and quick-ripening, the wine was created in 1983 as a tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who ran Château Montrose single-handedly from 1944 to 1960. Production varies from year to year but accounts for an average of 40 to 45% of the total production from the Montrose vineyard. It is aged for 12 months in 30% new French oak barrels.
The 2022 La Dame de Montrose is a blend of 71% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. La Dame is Château Montrose's second wine and has a fragrant, floral, and pure bouquet with notes of black cherries, blueberries, and violets. On the palate, the wine is well-balanced with a more opulent texture than its Saint Estèphes counterpart, thanks to the lush Merlot at its heart. It has commendable energy and is already very approachable, requiring no decades in the cellar to reach its full potential.
This is a rare double magnum (3 litre) version in OWC/1 - Even tastier, more festive and with a longer drinking window.
FACT: It's worth mentioning that we buy our (Bordeaux) wines directly and never through intermediaries, as we don't know all the journeys the wine has made or how it's been treated. |

A second wine that would embarrass numerous classified growths, the 2022 La Dame de Montrose unfurls in the glass with aromas of blackberries, violets, rose petals, charcoal and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy palate of striking concentration, energy and dimension. Seamless and complete, it's a blend of 71% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Wonderful freshness and brightness to this with currants and red berries, as well as chocolate and hints of coffee. Full and layered with round tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Lemon rind underneath it all. It has lots of length for being mostly merlot. 71% merlot, 23% cabernet sauvignon, 5% petit verdot, and 1% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 La Dame de Montrose is deep, pliant and rich. All of the intensity of this warm, very dry vintage comes through in the wine’s sheer size and ripe, dark profile. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice, spice and espresso are all amplified in this decidedly intense, concentrated La Dame. Qualitatively, there is little question this could have easily been a Grand Vin in a preceding generation. The 2022 is a stunning La Dame.
- By Antonio Galloni on April 2023
“Starting in June, we had four heat spikes where temperatures soared above 35 degrees,” explained Technical Director Vincent Decup. “We worked the soils early, removing the cover crop to reduce competition with the vines. We lowered the canopies and deleafed just before harvest, more of a practical consideration for the pickers than anything else. There was a bit of damage from hail, but it was 5-7%. Consider that we had 20mm of water from July 1 through to harvest instead of the 200mm or so that is more typical. In the cellar we opted for shorter extractions. The wines have alcohols in the 14.5% range, so similar to 2019 and lower than 2018.”

The second wine of Château Montrose, the 2022 La Dame De Montrose, tastes like a Grand Vin. More Merlot-dominated (71% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc), the terrific purity in its cassis and blue fruits give way to complex floral, forest floor, and violet aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, balanced, and elegant, I'd be happy to drink a bottle any time over the coming 15 years.

Deep dark ruby colour with purple reflections, delicate brightening on the rim. Nuances of black forest berries with subtle floral notes in the background, ripe plums, a touch of noble wood, cloves and candied orange zest. Textured, elegant, ripe cherries, fine, integrated tannins, mineral and salty finish, very harmonious and persistent, a great food wine, good ageing potential.

Higher proportion of Merlot than usual in the blend, this is deep ruby red in colour and opens to sandalwood, cedar, black pepper and rosemary notes, alongside ripe blackberry and creme de cassis fruits. A lucky vineyard located next to the river at one of the widest points of the Estuary, this is impactful and confident, with the fingerprints of the vintage. 31hl/h yield. 30% new oak.

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
