Description
Château Larrivet Haut-Brion from Graves-Pessac-Léognan is owned by the Gervoson family and today it is director Bruno Lemoine who brings the cru to the highest place within the appellation. This wine is made from a combination of mainly 61% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, supplemented with 21% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Merlot grapes. The vines have an average age of around 30 years old and therefore give the wine a pleasant amount of concentration and power. The harvest is done manually when the grapes have reached their perfect ripeness. The wine then matures partly 40% in new French oak barriques, partly in barriques that have been used once before and partly in barriques that have been used twice before. In the nose this wine offers pronounced, soft notes of (over)ripe black fruit, a hint of leather and a smoky undertone with some light notes of liquorice.
Opaque purple-black in color, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion bursts from the glass with deliciously fragrant aromas of black raspberries, Morello cherries and wild blueberries with suggestions of blackcurrant pastilles, candied violets, chocolate mint and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with layers of red and black fruit, framed by firm, exquisitely ripe, velvety tannins and a bold freshness, which is long and fragrant.

Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate. Revealing a complex, vibrant bouquet of cassis, lilac, iris, mulberries, spices and menthol complemented by barely noticeable oak, it's medium to full-bodied and layered with a seamless, pure texture and a fleshy core of fruit perfectly framed by velvety tannins and bright acids. The Cabernet Franc contributes a floral finish, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a balanced structure. It should age gracefully.

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion offers up aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, raspberry, violet, orange zest, iris and ripe plums, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate that's supple, seamless and elegant, its succulent core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a floral finish. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc—the most significant portion of this grape variety ever used at this estate run by Bruno Lemoine—this is one of the most interesting wines that this estate has produced in recent years. It matured in 15% amphorae, 50% new barrels and the balance in tanks.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is dense, powerful and explosive. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and mocha are amplified in this dramatic, deeply resonant wine. Gorgeous.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is bold, punchy and also quite exotic, because of the presence of Cabernet Franc. Succulent red cherry fruit, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and rose petal lend notable complexity with plenty of Franc perfume built into the layered, wonderfully expressive finish.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion was tasted on two occasions. The first sample was a bit suspect, intimating a little over-ripeness. A second showing was much better. Dark berry fruit and tertiary scents unwind on the nose and draw you in, nothing ambitious but neatly delineated. The palate sashays along with a firm but fine lattice of tannins and commendable balance. It evokes the sense of Pessac-Léognan on its finish that nicks the best from Left and Right Banks. Call me smitten.

This château, located directly opposite Ch. Haut Bailly is a very interesting terroir of very good quality. The prices of the wines remain favorable for the quality offered. It is owned by the Gervoson family and Bruno Lemoine is its director. Since 2015, they have a new cellar master, François Gaudichon, who is an oenologist and has gained experience in the Burgundy region (Vosne Romanée). Since then, the advice has come from Stéphane Derenoncourt (formerly Michel Rolland).
The history of Château Larrivet Haut-Brion goes back to 1840, the year in which the château was first mentioned among the first plantings of Pessac-Léognan. To this day, the château has become more and more famous. After several name changes from Château de Canolle, to La Rivette and Château Brion-Larrivet, the winery was renamed Château Haut-Brion Larrivet in 1874 by the then owner Ernest Laurent, a Bordeaux négotiant (officially recognized and authorized dealer in Bordeaux wines).
In 1893 the winery was sold again and then it came into the possession of Jacques Guillemaud in 1941 and acquired its present name: Château Larrivet Haut-Brion. Today it owns approximately 75 hectares of vineyards on mainly gravel subsoil with sand and clay. Château Larrivet Haut-Brion produces about 4500 liters of red wine per hectare and 4000 liters of white wine per hectare and plants 7700 vines per hectare. This is 2300 vines below average and this greatly benefits both the intensity and quality of the wine. Her red wines age on average for 14 to 18 months in different oak barrels and then another 10 to 11 months — depending on the vintage — in the cellars of the winery.
